I have become very paranoid about losing or having my desire stolen...why this has happened all of a sudden I have no idea.

What is the latest/best app that you can lock you phone down/track etc if such an event does happen?

Wavesecure is really good, although it's ~£10 a year.

Prey, EStrongs Security, Lookout Mobile all do a similar thing for free as far as I know :)

But they all require that the gps be left on to locate it properly

Been looking at using tasker to do this following this guide but it appears google has disabled the ability for apps to start up gps on the phone :(

You will be charged for using the Wavesecure system as the sms messages originate from the USA. It's not big money but worth knowing.

As mentioned, take a look at 'Where's my Droid'. Reason being that this is one of the only tracking apps that doesn't need the internet in order to function. It is all done by SMS, so is a bit more robust.

Prey would be the other good one, but the free version is a bit limited. Although a useful feature of Prey is the ability to text you if the SIM card gets changed.

If you want the On-Demand location notification that the free version of Prey lacks, take a look at Lookout.

I personally have all 3 of the above on my Desire atm. They're all tiny apps of a few KB in size, and don't use any CPU when not active.

Well as long as you remember to leave the GPS switch on, you should be fine. The actual GPS receiver isn't on all the time, it's really just a permission setting.

Doesn't HTC/Sense have something like this built in? I seem to remember a video of them showing off the web tools.

HTC sense has that feature - although some people have problems getting the phone finder function to work (I've had none thankfully).

You can lock the phone and leave a message on screen incl a number to call to return it or you can erase everything on the phone if you know it's gone for good.

I don't have GPS enabled a lot of the time (rarely in fact) and the mapping gets my location down to a pretty accurate level presumably just based on nearby wifi / cell towers alone ...

+1 HTC Sense built in. There web "my account" page is awesome. Can ring your phone and set it to loudspeaker all remotely.
