Android TV Performance

Hi all,

Got myself a new Sony TV which runs Android about a month ago, and it's been fantastic and runs like a dream. However, over the past few days I've noticed it's starting to run a bit slugish/laggy, particularly when navigating menus (movie/TV playback is fine).

I've noticed all the apps we've ever launched are still held within the 'Running Apps' menu. You can close each one manually, but can't close them all at once, and there's like, hundreds in there. I've read online you shouldn't have to close them due to Android knowning how to manage the available RAM, but something seems to be slowing it down.

Any tips/tricks/tweaks I can use to improve performance or close all running apps which aren't needed (there is a lot in the list which are needed for certain features of the TV to work)?

Welcome to Android TV.

Apparently a lot of it is down to the lacklustre hardware the OS is running on, not helped by the fact there are dozens and dozens of additional processes/services running to get everything functioning. The whole implementation is abysmal really, especially when the Android launcher itself does so little.

Oh well, guess I'm stuck with it then. I hope it doesn't continue to get worse over the next 6 months/year, it'll be unbearable if it keeps degrading at this rate :/

Do things like the nVidia Shield suffer from the same issues?

I had the Sony 43" 4K one which I took back twice due to the same issues.

Went into a main store and spoke to a Sony rep. He said it's slow as its early days as its a new operating system. Basically when you turn the tv off, your only putting into standby. To turn it off, you hold the standby button for 5-10 seconds and turns off. Then turn it back on, takes about a minute or so and for me that's stupid I couldn't stand it. It's basically like an android phone how it works.

Sent back and got a sammy 50" nano crystal and just better in every way :)

I've side loaded kodi-20151219-98e4713-Jarvis-armeabi-v7a.apk and it plays everything now. Even UHD and 4K :)

Not sure its the same on Sony TV's but on my Samsung I have disabled the quick start functionality. So that its a clean "boot" every time I turn on the TV. Takes 10 seconds to come on instead of 4 or 5 but I can live with that.

Don't have that option. It could really do with a Sony splash screen when you turn it on or something though, just to add a bit of a delay and let the OS catch up. As it is the TV tries to be ready to use straight away and just ends up being unresponsive.
