Right, i know i'll probably get a load of responses from both camps here but i'm going to buy my first android/cool/good/internet phone this month. I'm really stumped though with which to go for.

What do people reckon?

Galaxy S/Omnia/HD7?

Any help is much appreciated! :)

I'd recommend the Desire HD. Of course I'm bias'd because I have one, but my girlfriend has an SGS and I definitely prefer it over that. I haven't seen the W7 phones in detail but I just can't see the point in buying into them this early on when there's no equivalent to the Android market yet.

Simplicity and 'it just works' (extremely well) but a bit of a lacking app store - Omnia 7

Full on customisation and superior/in-depth software - Desire HD

I'd keep away from the Galaxy S, for all the great things about it there are just as many stupid bad niggles.

Windows Phone 7 is VERY under-rated, its far better than the iPhone in many, many ways and just needs an app store (and a few small software features that it lacks) to back it up now :)

Get the HD2...

Then you can try all of them...

WM 6.5
Android 2.2
WP 7 (I have a strong feeling that it will be running on the device at some stage)

For someone buying their first 'gadgety phone' this really isn't a good idea.

Most of the HD2 ports are quite bad in various ways and they aren't the easiest things to get working in the world.

Cheers for the responses. Gonna go into 02 tomorrow and browse. Might pick one up aswell if theres any good deals. Looks like Android is the way foward at the moment as it's more mature.

Its all down to personal preference.
If you have used an iphone and like the simplicity ,WP7 takes that to a whole new level. Its super slick and controlled.

If you are the kinda person to tinker and customize then Android is the one for you.

I would go read the list of WP7 niggles first. They will probably get sorted some time but for now stuff like no copy and paste and not being able to attach more than one photo at a time to an email is a bit strange for a smartphone.

Does WP7 let you drag and drop files into its memory like android? One thing i DESPISE when i go to use my ipad is having to be connected to software on my PC. Makes it a pain transferring stuff from two diffrent PC's

I'm gonna go have a play tomorrow at 02 but i think i'm gonna wait for this Galaxy 2, looks like it could keep me entertained for a while! Anyone have any idea when this is out?

It could be any time next year, rumoured to be February, though nothing much is known about it yet so its hard to say.

Yeah, looks like it's going to be a few months. Gonna go for the Desire HD i think, being watching some reviews on cnet and other websites...looks like a really good phone, lots to play around with!

There's only one slight drawback with the Desire HD, which is the battery isn't great.

As its your first real smartphone, this might shock you a bit. You will have to charge it (likely) every night unless you dont use it much during the day, in which case you'll be ok for 2 days at the most.

Its certainly worth getting as we'll be waiting a few months at least I'd imagine for the new Google phone, and if you love the Desire HD and want the newer one, you can flog it and get the new one for not too much extra outlay.

If you couldn't possibly wish for any extra from a phone (and this is likely the case), then you wont need to worry about it :)

Yeah i've heard this about the battery life, gobsmacking really that the battery is so poor. Whats the battery like in terms of leakage? i've found the Nokia batteries quite poor at this, they lose a lot of their reserve when you charge them without them being empty. Nokia have really lost their way i think...going nowhere!

BTW, why you got so many phones? You a drug dealer? :p

Battery tech has moved on a it since there was any large scale problem with battery degradation, it should be fine for the length of time you use the phone.

I was reading over on the htc hd thread that Mugen are bringing out a 1500 -1800 mah battery at the end of November, that sould drasticly improve the time needed between charges.

I know it means buying another battery but you'll have two so no matter if your away from home for a couple of days you should be fine.

havent played with the new windows phones other than a non working one in Orange shop but can recommend the Galaxy S. The win7 phones felt good in the hand though heavy and had good specs but they wouldnt get a fresh one out for me to play with for whatever reason. Win 7 is early and will probably need to mature before it gets some decent software and updates.

Desire HD has problems and my mate who upgraded from is Desire is not liking it. All HTC phones seem to have such potential but then you feel just let down by parts of it when you own one, and i've been through a few so know. I jumped on a Galaxy S recommend and not looked back. Will never go HTC route again and i was a fanboy :p

Get yourself down a shop and compare phones. You'll always going to be waiting for the next and greatest. Android and Apple are matured but the newcomer looks promising and you may benefit edging your bets.

It was said in jest, though I would argue that the android build I am using is fine, and the latest official rom is great (which you can run andriod on without issue).
