Anglia Progress

Out of interest Jonny, are you fitting a new roof lining at some point (or have you ever?). I've got one for my mk1 Escort but a quick half hour taking a look leads me to believe this is not a job I can DIY. :(

I swore never to touch another headlining after I took the one out my 100E and realised there was no way I'd ever get it back in :D

From what I've been told it takes lots and lots of practice to be able to get one in without it wrinkling or coming back down by itself. I'd pay someone to do it :D

Damn, that's what I thought! I'll just have to look around for somewhere local I guess!

Only a small amount of progress this week due to circumstances but some is better than none and this needed doing desperately. The headlight trims needed a whack with primer and I had a few drips of paint left which I hoped would stretch.

These are the suckers, rubbed and ready to go:

I masked up a board to spray them on:

Rolled the car back and put a couple of coats of paint on:

Finally where I had started to flat the boot I'd put a load of scratches in it by using paper that was too rough. I was worried it would show through the paint so better safe than sorry I blew another coat over the offending area to smooth it down:

I can re-rub it now with the correct grade paper and my final finish will be better as a result. I figure by getting as best finish as I can on the primer it'll save me work on the topcoat, what with being a novice sprayer and all :D

Not much progress this weekend as I had a friend staying over all weekend so I've had a few hours in the garage today but not much else. Block sanded the bootlid which has come up very nicely and both doors. One of them must have suffered some punishment in the time it has been standing againts the wall in the garage because there's a chunk of filler knocked out of one corner and a lot of digs and scratches so it's going to need a little more love to get it acceptable. I've got most of it with the stopper but it will need another blow over with primer and I'll need to buy a new tin for that because I'm out.

A quick check over the body and there are a couple of areas that need tlc as well, but it's looking pretty good and I'm still on target for the end date!

It's been a short while since I updated last but work must go on at a fast pace and I took a few days off to get some of the more time consuming bits done, namely the rubbing down and spraying. Had a really bad day and lost my direction a bit and started playing with the Pop on day Wednesday but got back on track yesterday and got the rubbing down done, then cleaned down the garage. I bought a roll of polythene to put down on the floor to protect from overspray and shot a few coats on the inside of the doors.

Then to my absolute delight today has turned into beautiful weather and I could ask for more to spray in. So slight change of plan I rolled out an area outside the garage to spray on giving me much more space and an empty garage to work in. Kill two birds with one stone and perfect space to do the bootlid in:

Binbags over the wheels so they don't get done in red!

First coat I just did around the edges, anywhere tricky to get to etc:

One coat on the bootlid:

This is after 2 or 3 coats maybe?

Meh, I lost count! I gauged it by how much paint was gone out the tin and how deep it looked. The last two coats I layed on thick and wet, got one run on the driver's side which is nothing to deal with at all and it's come out superb. A few bits of dust but nothing that won't polish out and orange peel is a minimum. Anyway, I'll let the pictues do the talking...

After lunch I did the door fronts with the rest of the paint I had mixed up.

And for my post lunchime progress I bring you painted doors! Again, did the edges first then a thin coat, here we are at coat number 1:

4 coats later here's the finished door with all the masking peeled off:

As you can see my sunlight has gone down and the temperature has dropped so the paint hasn't cured as quick as it did earlier in the day. I've had to leave them downstairs for a few hours to cure so a DON'T TOUCH! notice was in order:

Hopefully they will still be in one piece when I go down to put them to bed for the night...

It actually is a genuinely good finish and I'm really pleased with it. Should need very little rubbing to get it perfect :)

I'm amazed with how good a finish that gun gives (I have the same one but Sealey branded) for it's price. I repaired and resprayed the bumpers on my MG ZS over the past week or two and I was amazed by the finish. It's hard to see as it's a silver car, but:

Obviously I didn't take the time and effort you did as it's just my runabout car, but I was really happy with the result!

[scrapheap challenge voice on] Proper Job [scrapheap challenge voice off]

Looking good :D

Did the silver Merc survive without any red dusting at all??

Seems to have done. I was tempted to wipe a finger over it to see but then it would give the game away :D
