Annihilation (2018) - Trailer

I didn't even know they were making the South Reach trilogy into films... well, if this one does well at least. Can see why they chose Alex Garland to direct.

Alex Gardland, writer of Dredd, The Beach, Sunshine, 28 Days Later, writer and director of Ex Machina...won't need to watch another trailer, will just watch this as soon as it comes out.

OK, so for us in the UK this is now coming to Netflix in March? So no big screen release like U.S.

I wonder how much Netflix pay to do this?

I guess we only get Transformers films on the big screen now.

The decision to release “Annihilation” online internationally was reportedly made after a poor test screening. Paramount financier David Ellison was allegedly worried that the film was “too intellectual” and “too complicated,” and asked for the film to be changed for a wider audience.

To be honest, I'm really kind of disappointed by that. Big, ambitious Sci Fi is always best viewed on the biggest screen possible and (regardless of your opinion of the cinema experience) it's MADE an event by being there. As much as I love the streaming services, I feel moves like this make movies infinitely more disposable as an experience.

:(

Was definitely going to the cinema to see this, now I find its going to be in my house in a couple of weeks...exciting and disappointing. Then you find out the reason why and its crushing to hear that decision.

Would have been nice watching it on the big screen, hopefully it's got Dolby Vision as it's coming on Netflix.

Alex Garland wasn't happy that this is a Netflix release

Recently it was announced Annihilation would be released on Netflix internationally. What was your reaction to that?

GARLAND: Disappointment really. We made the film for cinema. I’ve got no problem with the small screen at all. The best genre piece I’ve seen in a long time was The Handmaid’s Tale, so I think there’s incredible potential within that context, but if you’re doing that – you make it for that [medium] and you think of it in those terms. Look… it is what it is. The film is getting a theatrical release in the States, which I’m really pleased about. One of the big pluses of Netflix is that it goes out to a lot of people and you don’t have that strange opening weekend thing where you’re wondering if anyone is going to turn up and then if they don’t, it vanishes from cinema screens in two weeks. So it’s got pluses and minuses, but from my point of view and the collective of the people who made it – [it was made] to be seen on a big screen.
