Often when connected to my pc I can hear a buzzing/electronic sound which is more pronounced with certain activities, for example right now when transferring files from one drive to another even with the sound muted. Will getting a soundcard stop this issue?

I also notice that with the sound muted in windows, I can actually hear the sound very faintly through the headphones. When using one of those plug in sound level controllers where you turn a dial, the headphones are silent however.

Difficult to say without knowing your set up. However I had a horribly annoying buzzing through my USB powered headphones while I used a USB port on the PC, as soon as I used a power socket adapter it stopped.

same problem
its hard drive noise
i think my sound card is broken (asus xonar dg)

Funnily enough I just actually removed my hard disk last night as I've replaced it with an external one I only connect when I need to make backups. Hopefully that will remedy the problem!

unplug the front panel usb headers from the motherboard, then see if noise stops

Will do, I noticed the buzzing from the front panel was particularly bad.

can also turn off c1e power saving state in the bios

cpu should still downclock at idle aslong as you use balanced power profile in windows power saving options

c1e usually gets rid of the noise

Disconnected front panel (probably a good thing since sparks come out if I try to plug a usb device in) and with the hdd removed there's still no difference. One thing of note is that the noise changes pitch depending on what's being displayed on the monitor.

Will try disabling power save mode next.

have you tried muting / disabling the recorder within the sound panel? (had a similar problem and this worked for me)
