Annoying COD2 Problem

Been trying to play COD online recently, but am getting a re-occuring and very annoying problem.

I can open the game fine, choose a server and change every setting under the sun - but once I connect to a server, choose my weapon and spawn - the game "dies".

I can see the normal mouse pointer on the screen sometimes - but cannot move or even get out of the program, resulting in a re-start.

I've re-started and it just keeps happening. My feeling is that the computer is dropping back to the Windows desktop once I spawn into the server.

Which is strange given that the game worked fine for several days.

Any suggestions? A clean install might possibly sort it out, but it's the equivalent of formatting your hard drive for a small windows issue.

Cheers.

I had this problem. It turned out it was my firewall, Kasperky. Also, for some strange reason gameplay also improved if I used the "proper" link to connect to the inet. For example, I had a shortcut on the desktop to my broadband dialler "Internet ADSL". When I connected to this via the shortcut the stops in CoD2 kept coming. When I pressed start/connect to/internet adsl it went fine.

That's my treatments that I had: Kaspersky firewall & shortcut icon

A new problem.

I can't change ANY setting graphically at all. If I do try to change anything (resolution, directx setting) then the game crashes and I'm back to the desktop.

A few seconds later a directx error pops up and sends me to a FAQ page. All of which I don't see as being the problem.

I've tried Directx7 & Direct x9 - but both crash. The only time the game will run is on the defaults, 800x600, no AA, Directx: Auto and I think low texture settings.

Uninstalled and re-installed. Same thing.

Downloaded the latest DirectX updater. Same thing.

Re-started and the same thing.

Anyone have any idea? I have the latest graphics drivers on my card (X1900XT) and the system is in good shape (virus, spyware free and updated).

 :(

Yup, i get the same as your second problem (can't change settings otherwise it crashes). I haven't managed to solve it but did find a work around. You need to open up the config.cfg in notepad. This file is located normally in 'C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2\main\players\username'. You can then edit the config options. It's fairly obvious what to do, just change the resolution/aa/af/sound etc and then save the file. Make a backup of the file though, just in case.

EDIT: You can also change the settings for your multiplayer game by editing the config_mp.cfg instead in the same way as you can for the config.cfg.

Cheers, Mark.

I've got the resolution fixed at the very least, the rest of the file is a bit all over the place and not as obvious to fix - but it'll do for now. :)
