Every so often XP pops up a window asking to dial-up. It happens when I'm using Firefox. I could just delete it but I need that connection incase my BB goes down. Why is XP wanting to dial when there's aperfectly good BB connection?

Is your broadband modem plugged into your computer or do you use a router?
You may have already tried this but if its a router then try setting the "Only dial when a network connection is not present" option in Internet Explorer properties.
Dont know if this will work for you but Ive used it a few times at work when computers had lots of different Connections.
