annoying flatmates

Do you have crap housemates?

I've lived in a bunch of shared houses myself, mostly students, and in my experience it's rare that the other housemates are people I can happily live with. For instance they're usually either noisy, unclean or just plain inconsiderate idiots.

So if you live with a bunch of random people, or have done in the past, how have you found the experience?

Oh and people who steal other housemates food should be shot in the face. Twice.

Same, when I was in 'halls' last year I was in a flat of 5 people, and there was only 1 person I could actually properly get on with all year.
This year I'm with course people, and to be honest, I'd rather not be. Again there is only one person that I can properly get on with and doesn't get on my nerves.

I can't wait for my placement year, and final year, both of which I plan on living by myself for if I can. Then beyond uni I guess I'll live by myself or with my missus if I'm still with her. :)

I think it's extremely rare to find someone that you can live with easily. One of my flatmates is obsessed with saving money, buying the cheapest toilet paper (my hands smell lovely because of it) and food known to man. The other cares so little he doesn't do anything, and does small things that annoy me like leaving washing up sponges to soak in dirty pans etc.

However they probably also don't like living with me, housemate number 1 because I don't mind about buying real toilet paper for 50p more, and housemate number 2 because I moan at him for doing small things that annoy me.

Luckily I don't really care that much and have just learned to ignore things I don't agree with, each to their own.

Nope, never lived with anyone I couldn't stand. Probably part luck (uni halls) and part judgement (houseshare in 2nd and 3rd years, fiancee).

Obviously you get annoyed from time to time, I remember in first year when I had exams on my wardrobe was literally vibrating because the guy across the hall had his bass cranked right up blasting out d'n'b and dance til 3 in the morning. But being being noisy or unclean doesn't worry me that much, a lot better than living with criminals nicking your stuff, bullying etc.

That said, the people I lived with in a house at uni were a bit boring, maybe I'd have had more fun with other people. But boring is better than scum.

in my first year i didn't really get on with my flatmates at all. This was probably because i was a lot less out going at the time and they weren't my sort of people. I lived with a girl and 3 lads in halls, the girl i got on with as she was my sort of person but the guys had a crap sense of humour and giggled like girls.. so cba with them. I get on better with them now when i only see them once in a while.

2nd year i lived with 3 lads, 2 from course and 1 other and 4 girls - 3 i was fond of the other not so. She was kinda excluded from stuff, because she was wierd and so unhygienic it was vile. My 2nd year was awesome probably about 100x more enjoyable. Living with people you actually like is so much better, you can be yourself more and just enjoy it.

I'm currently in my 3rd year doing a placement, living with a mate i met last year and some random girl who seems pretty cool but shes never about. So far its a good laugh, but i'm working most of the time so it's a lot different.

Next year i'll be living back with my mates from 2nd year hopefully.

End of Life Story.

I know what you mean. I live with 4 other guys that I did not know before I came to uni (I'm a first year though...). 1 of them is fine, he's older and pretty cool. See's things from my point of view etc.

2 of them are beginning to annoy me though. Noisy, unclean and plain inconsiderate idiots. Loud RnB music and PES 2008 (which apart from being a crap game, it's a real TV hogger). Leave things in the sink when they go home over the weekend / week. Generally untidy and leave No Swearing! around. Take ages in the bathroom when we all have 9am lectures.

So far I've been pretty tolerant as it's only been a couple of months and I'm not one to not give people a chance based on first experiences. However, such events wear you down after a while. I went away during Reading week and returned to see the place in quite frankly a disgusting state. I'm a bit of a clean freak (especially in the kitchen and bathroom) and realised that it wasn't going to be up to my 'standard' but it was way beyond what it should have been. I was the last to empty the bin almost 2 weeks ago! The sink was almost blocked all manner of food. The cooker is eugh. The dishes weren't washed properly at all (despite our having a dishwasher). They weren't even soaked.

Someone has been 'borrowing' my chocolate spread and hot chocolate aswell. That's not going to continue!

Apparently this is part of the experience of Uni nobody should miss out on. It's also the reason I decided to miss out on it.

You either get lucky and get a house with people who are decent and/or you know well already, or you end up with a bunch of selfish generic losers who think listening to drumb and bass or running up and down stairways at 4am is socially acceptable.

Crazy small world eh!

I'm in my Third year. The first year I was living with 4 friends from back home so that was fine.
Last year we lost one girl and moved into a house for 6 so we got 2 new people in. One guy was awesome but the new girl was a pain in the ass. Really snotty-look down her nose at everyone type person and she really didn't have any reason to think she was better than the rest of us.

We decided to leave the stunning house we had rather than stick with her for another year. Also the guy that moved in graduated and we got another 6 bedroom place but this year the two new people are friends so it's all good.

All in all I've not really had it bad but I have heard some horror stories.

I've always got on fabulously with all my housemates.

But then, i'm not an uptight, clean freak, who refuses to share and gets annoyed if someone makes more than 15dB of noise past 9pm.

Uni hall housemates had awful toilet habits, second year shared house with people who'd leave dishes on the side until they got mould on them, third year on placement at the minute and I'm with another few people with awful toilet habits, and a guy who keeps rubbing the messages off the kitchen whiteboard!

Been there, done it, what can my final year bring? :p

I had an awful experience on my placement year living with 3 other students attending the same placement scheme as I did. The guy was alright. Quite aggreable, compromising and considerate. But the two girls were the dirtiest, most selfish people I have ever met. And they were never wrong.

Having said that, I am not the easiest person to live with. Im very clean in the kitchen especially and will bring people up on anything. Using metal implements in non-stick pans, running water away or as mentioned leaving sponges in dirty water. It goes on and on. I dont think its unreasonable for me to not compromise on something as basic as hygiene or coming in at 3 in the morning drunk and noisey.

In future, I will be more careful who I go to live with.

first year was OK the two guys I lived were alrite, the girls while loud were nice except one who was really annoying complete airhead.

second year lived the same two guys from the first year, one of them I got on with quite well. The other though kinda of self destructed and became bit of a whiny baby and dropped out, he ****** me off so much.

third year flatmates are pretty good except one guy who is really messy when cooking and tends not to clean up afterwards.

I wasn't that easy to live with but I'm good now though! :)

That's a very "black and white" way of looking at things.

What I thought too, but chose to ignore it.

I'd rather be clean and have a clean place than be dirty and live in a dirty place. The only problem I have is that my house mates don't do any cleaning, so if I want to have a clean house, I have to clean it myself. I don't get thanked for it or anything...I know what it's like to be my mum :p.

I did have all my stuff shared by my house mates at the beginning of this year, but after I'd told them not to leave my stuff dirty, or to 'drip dry' and they did anyway so I removed my stuff from the general consensus of use.
If I do clean the bathroom when it's in a state, and they realise it's clean I get a 'oh yeah, I was going to do that' which actually is a lie.

Meh, I'm not here most weekends at the moment, so I can escape it all, and come end of exams, Junetime I shall naff off home. :)

I've had a mix really (I'm in my forth house but all my years' houses at uni have been different). Some people you just get on with all the time, and others on a night out. Big difference I have learnt the hardway.

First house-share I knew everyone but hated it, bar a couple of them that became my friends too they were all my BF's friends. I was very unhappy there for a variety of reasons and tbh pretty much avoided everyone.

Second house-share was with strangers and although they were ok people, they were so uptight it never really felt like home. They were a group of sheep who all followed one of the other housemates and they drove me nuts if I spent too much time with them. :p

Third is the one I'm in now. Started off not knowing 2 girls - 1 I hit it off with immediately and the other turned into a bit of a freak after I moved in  She tried to keep me and Jennie apart and it generally worked as neither of us put up much of a fight in order to keep the peace. She moved out in April though and once we were without her, we got on really well.

We filled the spare room with a rather lovely chap who was driven mad by us both but put up with us :p Jennie moved over the Ireland recently and so it's now just 2 of us in here again. :D
