Annoying freezing problem?

I've been having a really irritating problem on my desktop recently, at first I thought it was flash player, but more recently it's being doing it when flash isn't even running, so it could be anything. Everytime it's happened there has been audio output, but I've no idea if this is related.

What happens is the audio will stutter (it reminds me of the sound you used to get when VHS tapes used to freeze), then a second later it will freeze and the mouse won't click anything, then it will just freeze up altogether and I'll have to reset it at the switch.

I would be really, really grateful for any help as I'm really stumped as to what could be causing this issue, my specs are below.

Processor: AMD Athlon II X3 3.3GHz
MB: Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 AM3+
Memory: 4gb Patriot DDR3
Graphics: MSI Nvidia GT430
PSU: Corsair CX430
HDD: 250gb Hitachi CinemaStar, 160gb Hitachi DeskStar

Btw, temps are fine, always running between 25 - 35c.

Thanks in advance!
