my computer:

Asus A8N-SLi Premium board.
couple of SATA drives & IDE drive.
pcie x800 card with omega drivers.
windows xp sp2 patched up on windowsupdate

i built this machine about a year ago now i guess and pretty much since build i have had this weird problem. when i try to open a txt/jpg/avi/mp3 etc etc file in whatever program the computer hangs for about 1-3 seconds then it loads the file fine. once the file is open i can drag another file into the program and it loads instananiously. the problem comes if i go back to explorer and double click it to load a file, then i get the 1-3 second pause. it doesnt matter if the application is open. as you can imagine it is very annoying. on the weekend i formatted the system and started again.

slowly i built the machine up, i noticed immediately after format on fresh win xp minus drivers it didnt exhibit any of the pausing. i loaded up my basic apps and went to test it again and sure enough i get the annoying pause problem. the problem is also present if i try and delete a file in the explorer. once ive said delete there is a pause before bringing up the confirmation dialogue box.

here is what i installed.

nforce chipset drivers
omega vid drivers
nforce / audio drivers
onboard marvell nic drivers
windowsupdate patches
mediaplayer classic
winamp
azureus
winace
peerguardian2

thats it. i didnt do ANY tweaking to the system, so what are my options here. im thinking perhaps a BIOS update but the machine is performing fine otherwise...help.

I have the same issue on slightly different hardware.

Did a full format last weekend and have just installed all latest drivers and office and a couple of apps

no tweaking has been done.

Mine seems to take about 5 - 10 seconds before an app will load.

once the app loads all is well and runs at normal speed.

bugger thats an annoying problem mate, the only thing i can suggest is to start again but to test after installing everything. i.e install reboot, test..

whats azureus and peer guardian 2 for btw... i never heard of them before

If I understand you correctly, all you need to do is find out what application is causing the problem. You didn't say if you had this pausing issue after you installed your drivers as opposed to your applications..

If XP works fine on a fresh install then you should install your drivers one-by-one and keep testing to see when this pausing prob occurs. Then you should install your applications one-by-one and keep testing.

I've seen Windows doing this annoying pausing over the years and it was always something to do with drivers. Have you got the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard?

hey fellas, thanks for your help.

i couldnt isolate whether it was driver or app based. id heard stories of dodgy nvidia sm bus / ide drivers and horror stories about BIOS etc.

so i went back to basics, reformatted on a spare hard drive and literally installed every app and rebooted twice.

I FOUND IT! it was blaze DVD, just standard DVD watching software. i have no idea why as its a small 8 meg self contained app...ill see how i get on, i uninstalled it from my proper build and its all good in the hood.
