Anonymous claims it shut down over 40 child porn sites...

Anonymous has been very public in the last several months about its various attacks on web sites owned and operated by the federal government and businesses. Much of their attacks have been blatantly illegal, even though the group believes its actions to be justified. Now comes word that Anonymous has gone after a group that is far worse; operators of child pornography sites.

Security News Daily reports that the group started "Operation Darknet" over a week ago when it discovered a secret network of web sites under the name the Hidden Wiki. These sites contained links to child porn sites that were being hosted by something called Freedom Hosting. Anonymous decided to put its efforts to attacking and shutting down Freedom Hosting's servers and it seems to have succeeded.

In a statement on the Pastebin web site, Anonymous said, "By taking down Freedom Hosting, we are eliminating 40+ child pornography websites, among these is Lolita City, one of the largest child pornography websites to date containing more than 100 GB of child pornography. We will continue to not only crash Freedom Hosting's server, but any other server we find to contain, promote, or support child pornography."

Now this is the kind of hacking we approve of. Anonymous as a whole may have some ideas about the government and businesses that we don't agree with but there's no disagreement that child porn in any form is reprehensible and should be eliminated. The kinds of people who sneak around and create shadow web sites and file servers to distribute child porn are the lowest of the low and we doubt that law enforcement officials would argue with Anonymous' attempts to do away with this kind of behavior.

Hopefully Data has been passed to the relevant Law Enforcement Authorities so justice can be served properly, rather than sick sites like this just being shut down and left to start up again only because the sick ** Please fully star out swear words *** running them are still free to do so...

is 4chan one opf the sites?

Well, I don't want to sound like a 4chan fanboy, as I'm not 15 anymore and haven't been on the site for years, but that kind of thing was always frowned upon and deleted promptly.

Even the darkest corners of the internet have morals.

Its not, with child porn groups/rings you don't want to alert people they are on to them. You find it, you tell the police who will monitor everyone using and uploading to those sites then take down the sites and as many people involved with them as possible which is far better.

EDIT:- if they stole lists of clients, ip addresses and the like and worked out who was uploading and passed that on I take it back.

I don't really care about the sicko's who want to look at it, the absolute goal in these situations HAS to be finding who makes it and putting them in jail AND hopefully resueing kids being abused.

I agree with drunkenmaster on this one, it would be better to work with the police and get the people uploading caught.

The hosting can simply be moved.

I'm sure that a lot of these sites are run in countries that don't have the resources or will to track them down. In that case the only viable option is the one anon has taken which I think is great. Of course if they have the chance of getting IP addresses they should be passed on. A lot of them may reside in countries that will do something about it.

Would be interested to know how they managed to pool enough resources in the kind of hidden web these servers reside.

Crash would somewhat indicate DDoS attacks and one normally needs to proxy their way onto the hidden web.

I was under the impression that this was mostly impossible due to the use of TOR rendering it impossible to trace end users since all traffic through the TOR network is routed through several PCs.

Does not prevent retarded users giving up their identity on it though. If they use a 'real world' email address, name, nickname, payment details etc - so many things you can cross reference for probable cause.

Wait, this confuses me let me get this straight.

Most of 4chan love HiddenWiki
Anonymous formed from 4chan
Anonymous close down HiddenWiki
Anonymous claim to fight for freedom of speech then close down sites.

I am confused.

This confuses you? You really think child abuse is a form of "freedom of speech" that they should not have shut down?

As much as people love to be 'cool' and 'radical' by going on 4chan, it is a long, long way from being anywhere remotely close to a "dark corner of the internet".

Indeed, the true dark corners of the internet would be the sites they just closed down, well done anon.
