...and leaks them.

During the second week of March 2012, a Dell Vostro notebook, used by Supervisor Special Agent Christopher K. Stangl from FBI Regional Cyber Action Team and New York FBI Office Evidence Response Team was breached using the AtomicReferenceArray vulnerability on Java, during the shell session some files were downloaded from his Desktop folder one of them with the name of "NCFTA_iOS_devices_intel.csv" turned to be a list of 12,367,232 Apple iOS devices including Unique Device Identifiers (UDID), user names, name of device, type of device, Apple Push Notification Service tokens, zip codes, cellphone numbers, addresses, etc. the personal details fields referring to people appears many times empty leaving the whole list incomplete on many parts. no other file on the same folder makes mention about this list or its purpose.

It's good to know Apple keeps our data in safe hands. :)

The privacy brigade are going to have a field day...

Apple or the FBI are going to get told off methinks.

If anyone thinks companys/governments dont keep information on each and every one of us they are naive at best. Heck even your shopping is monitored so they can send you the special deals/vouchers.

Why on Earth does the FBI have a laptop full of Apple UDIDs?

I'm not saying that Apple is a government front to bring about the transformation of the USA into a surveillance state as hinted by their 1984 ad, but Apple is definitely a government front to bring about the transformation of the USA into a surveillance state as hinted by their 1984 ad.

On a serious note, US retail chain Target claims that their analytics are so sophisticated they can predict the due date of pregnant shoppers by subtle changes in their shopping habits. Which is pretty impressive/really terrifying.

I should imagine Tesco/Dunnhumby/Sainsburys/Nectar are the same in the UK

however comitting a federal crime like that makes it really bad for them if they get caught!

How likely is it that Apple aren't involved and that it was the FBI collecting this info themselves? I guess with the amount of info being held and the level of detail, not a very high chance?

Aren't Google in bed with US intelligence agencies? I'd be surprised if most of the big US corps aren't (Microsoft, Facebook etc)

/edit - I stand corrected. I misread and thought it was just a list of UUIDs. Doh!

It would seem farfetched that the FBI would have all the UDIDs linked to full details of each owner. Either they're involved in some super hardcore snooping or Apple is handing over the data that they collect each time a machine is registered or purchased from them.

Whether or not they are being coerced to hand this data over will, I'm sure, come out over the coming weeks. I can't think of any viable incentive for them to collect data and hand it over to the FBI gratis.

...I'm confused. Why are apple getting the abuse?

FBI lost information, provided by apple.

No one here knows what circumstances those details were acquired under, but considering its a law enforcement agency, its a good chance they were legal channels right?

Naughty FBI. Apple arent at fault here!

But it's cool to hate Apple isn't it?

Sure I read a while back that the US had brought in a Law that made any US Corporation legally obliged to give all it's Data to the Govt.

It's for the war on TERRORLOLISM!!!!!
