thanks for the reply's everyone, good ideas there.......

to clarify, i used to have a tri SLI system, he has one single 8800GTX which were planning on using again,

probably going to pull out his dvd-r and i'm going to have a look at what HDD's he has.

where does that put us?

i'm buying this tomorrow and it's down to two systems......

the parts that matter are

motherboard

Biostar TPower Intel X58 @ £218
or
Foxconn Renaissance Intel X58 @ £168

ram

OCZ Reaper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-15000 (1866MHz) Tri-Channel
or
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Triple Channel

you don't need to convince me i'd have the biostar and the ocz but it's £200 more and he'll need convincing this is a good idea!

He wants a £1000 computer with what's now essentially a £99 graphics card?

If he's wanting it for media (video/audio encoding, intense photo editing, number crunching) then ignore me, otherwise you might want to think about adjusting one or the other.

Either save £400 with a lower specced PC to match the card, or spend some extra to give the rest of the system justice. Otherwise his £500+ CPU/motherboard/RAM combo is going to be spending a lot of time hanging around doing nothing.

well after all that we ended up with

Biostar X58
OCZ Reaper 6gb @1600
i7 2.66 @ 3.6 easily
Nvidia 275 GTX
Coolmaster 600W psu
and a Noctua cpu cooler

it's an absolute monster and a huge upgrade from his

AMD x2 something or other
8800 GTS
2GB geil ram

sadly it's been snaffled away beck to his house, and i'm affraid to say it's waisted on him!

my pal and i have built it (he does the fitting i do the overclock,

took 3 hours (and 30 mins to build the bloody Noctua cooler!)

that's including installing the os all updates and a 3dmark vantage run through (13810)

and he's taken it home to play his empire total war game.... what a waste but some people have some money burning a hole in there pockets!

and we didn't charge him a penny for our services either!

If he's not using it for a home server or backup PC, stick it on the member's market to recoup some of the costs (or a second monitor!)
