Hey guys,

I have been viewing all of the threads in this section but thought that I would create my own to get a few of my questions answered.

At the moment I am using a Samsung SyncMaster 913N (TN panel, 4:3) but am seeking an upgrade to a 24" with about £450 (max) to spend. I am an avid gamer and enjoy video editing as well as obvious things like web browsing and movie watching .

I am looking at the BenQ FP241W and Hazro 24" since you guys are recommending them both. I was originally looking at the TN panel 24" monitors, but a lot of you guys seem to really notice the worse viewing angles on the larger screen size, so I will probably avoid them if I can. If any of you do have a TN panel 24", tell me how you are finding it, since it would be great to have the lower response times if at all possible.

The one thing that does bother me about the Harzo panel is that it isn't HDCP compatible, and since I deal a lot in video I can see it coming in handy in the future. What are the pros and cons of these monitors, and which would you go for?

I also have a query about the response time of my current monitor compared to the 24" monitors above. My 19" is rather old by today's standards, so do you think that the new 24" monitors would have a better response time, even though the 19" is a TN panel?

If you guys have any other suggestions as to other monitors I should be looking at, please let me know!

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Maybe wait until the summer when the Hazro's will have HDCP across the line.

Apart from that, you could always get the Hazro now and then an HDFury HDCP dongle later if lack of HDCP becomes an issue.

rather than adding yet another 24" thread, ill ask here, how is the aforementioned BenQ at scaling to non native res, most likely 1680x1050?

Another one, input lag seems a hot topic with the newer panels atm, how is it on that monitor, whilst im by no means competitive in CSS id rather not be suffering noticeable input lag whilst playing

Im guessing the 1:1 pixel mapping does wonders for IQ when gaming on a 360 aswell?

Gateway FPD2475W. 24" S-PVA (Samsung Panel), DVI (HDCP), VGA, 2x Component, 1x Composite and S-Video. Picture in picture (moveable, sizeable with alpha-blended transparency and driver mouse-over transparancy). 90 deg rotation. Even got a security pin if it gets disconnected. All menu functions are fully controllable from drivers, 1:1 Pixel mapping (all res, all inputs), no noticable lag.

All in all, probably the best panel I've seen. I went through the debate over which screen to get for months before deciding on this. When you find the price - you'll see why. It's a good £100 cheaper than any other PVA (bar the OCUK one) and cheaper than most TN panels.

It looks the mutts nuts too.

Only one source in the UK whom I can't mention here...

Am not knowlegable enough to answer your first ?

mrk would be able , I think , to give you a definiative answer, but I believe he may be suspended at moment. Hopefully someone else can step in.

Do not own 360 so cannot comment.

Lag - seen none:)

That was the monitor I was going to get before I understood what all the different types of panels were. Do you notice the smaller 160°/ 160° viewing angles and is it good for gaming?

never had a problem with the viewing angles, assuming thats horizontal angle?? IE looking left and right at it??
I play plenty of FPS's and ps3 on it and have never had it ghost. The panel is good imo.

I meant horizontal and vertical viewing angles. Do you notice any areas of the screen that are darker than the rest?

It is a very tempting panel to buy since a lot of people seem happy with it here and it would leave me some spare cash for a new GFX card or something when I need it. I am a bit wary though that TN panels can usually only display 6bit colour reproduction compared to the PVA / IPS panels, and they bluff 8bit colour reproduction with dithering.

On my Samsung 205 it was the way the colours 'lightened' from top to bottom and , to a lesser extent , from left to right that I did not like.

Also you really needed to be face on - viewing angles were not good.

These problems may not apply to the 245b or be something that doesn't worry you.

I was unhappy with the Samsung and decided to risk buying the BenQ which is a pva panel - MUCH better and as far as I can see it doesn't suffer either lag or ghosting when gaming.

To be honest, you really need to try and see some monitors in the flesh to decide for yourself what you would prefer. A lot of us on here have a preference of one panel type - that's what works well for us.

I would recommend going to your nearest big town/city and trying to see some in the flesh. I know it's not always easy to get a decent set of monitors together (I couldn't when I went to Birmingham, took a trip down to the big smoke to see a load of different panel types). Some of the new crop of TN's have gotten rather good for most uses, and if they would suit you after having a look at one grab a cheaper panel and spend the excess on a decent graphics card for that 24" gaming goodness :D

I have no idea if my samsung is a TN panel. I assume it isnt but I have nothing to back that up. It is a great screen and was recommened by the shop staff last september time. I paid 320quid for it then so I assume its cheaper now. Looks the dogs nuts on a 1080p film.....

My new BenQ, just to give you a taster.

I haven't tried it with a computer or my MacBook yet, but it's crystal clear with the Xbox in 1080p.

Didn't know about the 1:1 setting when I took this picture, but in all honesty there isn't much difference.

I would guess at that price for a 24" it'll be a TN panel. One sure fire way to know is to look at an extreme vertical angle (normally bottom up), if the image "inverts" it's a TN.

Samsung is a TN panel. Only their "T" series are PVA's (odd eh?).

For value for money/quality/features - you won't beat the Gateway FPD2475W - as per my earlier post ;) Trust me, I spent 4 months trying to! (It's cheaper than the Samsung!)

Another one to try if you cannot quite stretch to the 24" Hazro is the 23" jobby. It's an older panel (16ms reponse), but will be as good as the 23" ACD.
