OK, I was playing the CM DiRT demo and my 360 crashed.

Rebooted, tried again, and it crashed again after about 2 minutes. So I tried the Forza demo and it's fine.

Tried a few more games, and anything shader-intensive (Blacksite demo, Gears of war etc. ) cause it to crash. Stuff that isn't so graphically demanding runs fine.

Over the last few days I have been getting graphical glitches and 'micro freezes', so I was expecting something like this to happen.

It is out of warranty, and doesn't have a warranty sticker anymore anyway :o

Damn :(

Sounds like GPU overheating, would you be confident enough to remove the GPU hs and re-apply thermal compound?

My thoughts too. I'll try putting some Arctic Silver on it...

Theres a much easier x-clamp replacement than the rbjtech one... as that involves drilling the case, theres another one which only requires screws (5mmx10mm x0.8) and washers (5mm) It works in exactly the same way and is massivly easier.

Overheating would be 2 flashing lights, days before mine went I would get graphical glitches and random crashes, until it wouldnt come on without 3 red lights. So yours is on the way there but not quite dead yet.

OK, an update to this.

I removed the GPU heatsink and cleaned the old thermal compound off (it was like chewing gum), and applied some Arctic Silver.

I also moved the 360 to a better ventilated position.

Fired it up, and managed to get 2 and half races in on the Dirt demo, before it crashed. I was previously unable get past the second race.

So I pulled the 360 apart again, gave the CPU the same treatment, and 6 races in a row later it's still going strong.

Fingers crossed that's nailed it.

Good to hear, i have a 360 manufactured in Jan 06 and its still going strong. I think i was one of the lucky ones, i havent experienced many if any crashes, maybe 4 or 5 since i got it, might just apply some AS5 as precaution.

don't worry you'll get your share of 3 rings soon. :p

It's almost like a feature of the x360 and everyone has accepted it as a fact. buy another one as spare so you wont be dissapointed at crucial time.

Mine has started doing the same, i got a single beep then it freezes. rebooted it last night and got the trusty RoL, laid it down and it worked fine, i think i might have the same problem :(

If you buy a spare though, you'll have it sitting there doing nothing with it's warrenty ticking down.

Well its lasted a year and a half so its more than most ppl :D

Thats how mine went - graphic glitches freezing. Eventually ring of death and that was that (mine was oct 05 manuf).

Bought a new one with a warranty now - ho hum

I'm tempting fate here, but no problems with mine after a year or so, even thought it has a PS2 resting on top of it lol.

Still, as its out of warranty anyway, I might apply some AS5 as a precaution.

Im pretty sure that AS5 on its own will not be an adaquate fix, it may get you a little more time but the main problem is the x-clamp putting pressure on the mobo causing the solder to crack. Thus by removing the x-clamp and mounting the heatsink in a way that distributes the pressure correctly people have had massive success.

Well, it froze again this-morning then gave me the 3-lights :(

Here's where it gets srange, I rebooted it, and it gave me the 3-lights, but still continued to boot into the dash

I was even able to play a game, no problem atall, all whils it's still flashing those 3-red lights

Played like this for about an hour, then it crashed again.

Currently doing the 'towel trick', I don't hold much hope though...........

a mate of mine is on his 3rd, ms have been decent and prompt in sending out the coffins and sending back out replacements but it does leave you a bit.....meh.

Did the towel trick, managed to play for a while, then the lockups came back. Can't play for any longer than about 5-mins with it locking up.

That's it then, another one bites the dust. I'm out of warranty too :(

I think every person that bought a 360 in the entire world has had it die on them. ( OK that was OTT) It does seem that way with the amount of people that makes topics about their 360's dying and now they're on their 8th 360. lol

I know it may be down to how some people place or where they put their 360 but a game consoles are suppose to be idiot proof. I think this may be why many of Nintendo's older consoles were a little ugly as they were made to withstand kids and idiots alike.

I agree on that point. Seing people suggesting the best position and place to put the console in order to stop it from failing is a bit too much. Come on, it's supposed to be a fun and entertainment device, not a fragile vase. The x360 isn't reliable while the PS3 is too expensive and I don't quite like the graphic quality of wii games :( I'll probably buy a PS2 instead and keep my xbox and Gamecube

I treat my 360 as I do my PC, ie do not cram it into a tight space filled with other electronic items, give it room to breathe in air, and give it room to exhaust the hot air.

Yep same here, when i have it out its away from the tv, radiators etc and its near the center of my sitting room with no other electrical devices around it and i'd like to think that its the main reason my 360 has lasted a year and a half and still going strong.
