Hey guys another 3gb question , and another noob here...

I have a system that was built from components purchased from you OC and need to upgrade the memory in it. Im currently running at 1GB but need to go to at least 2 GB , but preferably 3GB if this config is possible. Ive read the Asus manual and am unsure whether i can have 2GB in one set of Dimm sockets and the existing 1GB on the other two.

My sytem report as it is now is as follows -

What i am after is advice on what memory I can buy from OC to upgrade that will match what I currently have.

So i need another 2x512Mb's at minimum to take me to 2gb.
or if poss
2x1024mb's to take me to 3gb ( again im not sure if this is possible )

The system is being used for photographic work , so cutting edge gaming speed is not applicable any more to me , I just need more memory that is compatible with my MB and my current memory.

So what memory should i bee looking at ? and how much of it ??

Thanks

Andy

Assuming I can add another 2gb to my current 1gb (?)

Would this work with the crucial I already have ?

OcUK Value 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit (MY-006-OK)

That board can take upto 4GB memory as i have the same board running 2GB Corsair (2x1024GB), im not sure sure on the memory your running whether or not they will be compatible with each other as theyre low latency ones!

What wll you be using 4GB for?

Well I wanted to go 3 gb for economy really, but im doing a lot of photoshop work , and with multiple layers a single files can creep up to over a 1gb quite easily on a heavy portrait retouch for example....

And if i need another file open at the same time , 2Gb really wont cut it.

It'll be more important that your CPU supports that configuration and doesn't knock them down to 333 Mhz. There are also a fair few issues with Athlon 64 memory controllers with not running matched RAM, even outside of dual channel pairs. You'll obviously lose the faster latencies of the XL but you can't get 1GB XL sticks anyway.

If it was me I'd at least pay the extra over OCUK value for Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200PT at £135. For the warranty more than anything (certainly not the heatspreaders). Perhaps just try swapping out your current RAM for 2GB and see how it goes, if your happy with the upgrade I'd leave it there, nothing to stop you trying your 1GB set in there and you can always sell it on if it doesn't work, those modules are pretty high end so should still command a decent price.

Are you using Windows 64-bit?

Good idea...thanks for the suggestion.

Will i really see much difference between these two -

Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS3 (MY-039-CS) Price: £114.99 (£135.11 Including VAT at 17.5%)

and

Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS) Price: £134.99 (£158.61 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Wasnt sure your price was refering to with vat or without vat...so both sort of match your suggestion !

No im not using 64bit atm , is that good or bad ;-) ?

Latencies don't make that big a difference, few frames in games between those two but seeing as you already have the fastest latencies available you might want to spend the extra, those Corsair C2PT should hit the fastest latencies you can get with 1GB sticks. I'm guessing with rendering they might make quite a diff too if your working with large files that take ages too but I don't really know.
