Another, another 40D is here thread.. Does the congo'bongo?

Damnit, all this talk of magnified viewfinder, better high ISO and Live view is making me want to upgrade my 30D now :(

Ok here's a bit of a more varied ISO noise vs detail loss example on the 40D to to squash any debating!

sorry don't know what monitor you are using but on my brand new LG 22" this looks really noisey to the point if you converted to black and white it would like like a really old photo.

i still stand by what i say the noise difference from iso 400 is noticable especially on the black parts.

If you think that's noisy for iso3200 compared to competing models at this price then you need to look harder !

Earlier you said you can see details being lost which is clearly not the case since in my example you can see the individual droplets of ink on the CDs Album art insert paper, there's no detail loss, just added grain from the high iso range. I could have used a standard object but smooth surfaces won't show detail loss like printed paper will because you won't be able to see the ink droplets from the print process in such detail.

yup noise is there of course and clearly visible at 1600+ but it's noise that does not cause a distraction like on previous bodies and noise that does not take away image detail. Perfectly usable!

Just to double check, the 40D and 30D use the same battery grip right?

I don't want to buy yet another grip.. :)

Well the BG-E2 will work with your new 40D (I am using mine) however the BG-E2 is now phased out with the BG-E2n which is slightly larger with the new AF-ON button. The current one you have will work just fine.

Infact you'll be pleased to know that the BG-E2 fits more flush with the 40D which is a nice surprise making the body feel more solid.

Sorry to rain on your parade but that's completely wrong. The BG-E2n is identical to the BG-E2 except it has limited sealing around the battery door. That's it, a tiny foam strip.

Canon released with the 40D a wireless transmitter/portrait grip (It takes one BP511 which powers the transmitter) with an AF-ON button and much better build quality and fit. I don't remember the exact name of it but it costs about £500.

Sorry you are correct. apologies. It almost completely slipped my mind the wi'fi grip was released. I was merging parts of the two. It was almost a year ago since I read up on these..
Thanks xolotl for the correction..

Still to answer Raiders question. The BG-E2 will work fine.

The 40D has no infra red receiver, which I do use a lot on my 400D instead of the cable release.
A handle tool to leave of the new 40D !

Hmm I just realised I don't think I've been making use of the 124bit RAW files yet the 40D records! I have my ACR set to display convert straight to 8bit out of habit so tonight will see what it's like when working with adjusting levels etc on various images !
