MEP plans EU build ban on cars faster than 100mph

The EU Parliament's environment committee is considering a proposal to ban all cars capable of exceeding 100 mph (162 km/hour) from 2013. The proposal, put forward by LibDem MEP Chris Davies, is based on the arguments that cars that go faster than 100 mph are "over-engineered to a ridiculous degree", and that for safety reasons, they need to be heavier, and hence to burn more fuel.

"Cars designed to go at stupid speeds have to be built to withstand the effects of a crash at those speeds. They are heavier than necessary, less fuel efficient and produce too many emissions," says Davies, who resigned as LibDem group leader last year following an unfortunate email exchange on the subject of Israel.* "At a time when Europe is worried about its energy security it is sheer lunacy to approve the sale of gas guzzling cars designed to travel at dangerous speeds that the law does not permit."

Hopefully this will never see the light of day... though it would seem in-line with the EU's other slew of nonsense they like to put forth (imo).

I hope this absurd Liberal idea doesn't happen. They never get listened to anyway nor will they run our country :)

Bye bye huge european car industry, virtually everything the germans throw out would be banned.

Theres tons of silly preposals like this on the .govs, just ignore them. Non will pass, bar raised tax.

A 716i could be interesting though

Would have to be a 710i or something to not be able to exceed 100mph. Even things like 1.2 corsa's can do 100mph.

What a silly article :)

Nah, they'd all just get electronic speed limiters which everyone would then bypass and nothing would change.

Then of course there's the fact that those who like to drive their cars in places where driving at over 100mph is perfectly legal, such as trackdays, would have something to say about the whole thing.

Doesn't weigh the same as a 7-Series though :)

Mass does not affect top speed of a vehicle :) But anyway, its irrelevent as posted as it will never ever ever happen

Yes it does. :)

As the mass increases so does the normal reaction of the ground on the car. When this increases so does friction, so heavier the car, the more friction. Though by not a totally huge amount.

I knew someone would come up with the smartarse technicalities :p in the real world though, aerodynamics and outright power combined with suitable gearing is what affects it. A 7-series with a little engine would probably still crack it due to low drag.

Anyway, enough of that

I can't help but think that Japan has their own 180kph speed limiter law. That doesn't seem to have stopped them building the NSX, STis, Evos, GTOs, 350Zs, Skylines, or importing a host of euro cars.
I really don't see this making any significant difference apart from wasting a huge amount of government time debating it.

All this means is that a crackpot liberal has submitted a paper.

It will be binned, mostly by the Germans.

Fox is right, there is far too much money in the sports car business, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche all have strings in the EU parliament to pull.

Indeed, the worst that will happen is manufacturers will put an electronic limiter on the cars, and it is trivial to remove said limiters.

The guy doesn't have a clue what he's talking about anyway. Cars aren't heavier because they are capable of high speeds, the reverse is true.

Cars have become more powerfull to compensate for the extra weight of all the new safety features (all-round safety, not 'high speed safety' as this muppet suggests), and the higher top speeds of the average everyday car are merely a by-product of the higher power requirements.

that guy can go and burn in hell as far as i care, my 12yr old 1.3 rolla can (in theory :p) do 108, does that mean i do, hell no, something would probably break if i tried

and if it passed, i imagine germany would be out of the EU very quickly (is a polo even a sub 100mph car  )

Sound like a great idea to me. You don't need a car that does over the speed limit.

In the same way i don't need a 4x4.
