another DLC annoyance

DLC has allowed new ways of milking games. The Capcom SFIV costume pack and RE5 multiplayer mode were similar jokes.

Edit: Where does it say that they'll cost anything?

as that link doesnt work for me, I'll assume you either misread or its misquoted.

IW said they are releasing two map packs exclusivly (timed I think it was) for the 360. They did not say "just after release" and Bravo2Zero has pointed out that this doesn't mean there will only be 2 map packs.

I've never been able to bring myself to purchase the CoD4 map pack that was released on the Playstaion Store as it's blooming £7.99!!!

It would work out cheaper if I sold my copy of the game and bought the GOTY edition as you get the maps free with it.

I've changed the link so people can read it.
It says they will be released shortly after launch. They could be free but i'll be pretty ****ed if they charge us for them.

You know who is to blame? Pirates and places that do trade ins
If people paid for games (or devs got a cut of 2nd hand games), then they wouldn't hold some back for DLC. What IW should do is you get a code with the retail game giving you the maps for free (like what happened with GOW2)

You can't blame trade in places.World At War sold 11 million copies. That's hardly gonna leave the devs/publishers short of cash.

As we're talking about the call of duty series I think that number is relevant.
Modern warfare 2 will probably sell more.
I agree about pirates but 2nd hand games is rubbish.
A lot of people want a game as soon as it's released so will buy it new.

Poor devs can't win!

Either they chuck all the maps in from the start and gamers complain that there's no future support, or they chuck them in later and people say they should have included them from the start!

We should have stuck with Pong.

I've no problem with devs releasing content 6 months or whatever after a game is released.
Charging us for content just after a game has gone on sale says to me they could have put it in with the game, but they're milking us for more cash.

Sorry, gotta disagree.

Someone has to make those maps, and it's not a quick 10mins on BSP like it was in Quake days.

There's a hell of a lot of effort goes into make maps, strategic layouts, places where players can't get stuck or places where snipers can hide out of sight the entire game picking off anyone from any angle.

It's a lot of work, a lot of hours and someone has to go home at the end of the day and get paid for the hundreds of hours that their creation is going to give someone.

Not milking at all, it's continued support from both developer and gamer.

That is exactly what they should do. Only have 2/3rds of the maps on the disc and the rest as a code as you say. Of course people that pirate SP games will still do the same but if I was infinity ward and knowing how popular MP was I'd stick the most popular original maps as a DLC code.

The Halo wars one was a big joke TBH. I bought it because I love the game but the download for new game types was 2.1mb. Very very simple to hold back that much of the game.

Don't forget the game could go gold maybe 6 weeks before release date. Then say if it is only another 6 weeks after launch you get the map packs. That is 3 whole months of development time on those maps alone.

New game modes are always going to be tiny like that, code is a lot smaller than new game assets.

I don't get the problem if it is free

Most people aren't going to need them if they haven't got a console which connects to the net as you will at most only get a 4 player game (most new maps support much bigger numbers)
If you do play online you will be able to dl it

There is also the possibility that they couldn't fit it on the disc? I know its a slim one, but you never know.
