Another G5 case project

Hi all - inspired by the couple of recent G5 rebuilds, I've decided to have a go myself.

I've got a case and stripped it out - it took a hefty bang on the bottom via the courier, but I've straightened it out (pretty much, need to finish the bottom off) and am now accruing bits.

Couple of photos here (too big? Can resize if needed)

Since this the PSU in the bottom is out too, and the cables on the back
This is be a fairly long term project, as I need to sell things to buy new (disposable income took a dive when 2 kids came along!!), but I've enough float to start, and a decent enough PC to sell to fund the next stage, so should make some progress.

So what I've got so are is the empty case, some paracord for braiding, some heatshrink for the ends of the braiding, an H80 (one of the ones on the shipping container) and 2 of these:

and an appointment to see Dave at the Laser Hive next week to discuss back plates and the like.

So quite a few bits to go - I'm thinking of a Haswell chip (probably an i5, as I don't do much that needs hyperthreading), and was kind of set on the ASUS vi Gene, but I'm not sure about mATX. Also need to think about a PSU sooner rather than later, especially as I need to learn how to re-braid cables, and also decide whether I'm taking the PSU to bits to fit in the G5 psu case, or just installing it in the top of bottom. For what I want, I'm thinking a fully modular, 650w decent psu should do the trick - but any thoughts welcomed.

A lot of this will depend on what I discuss with Dave - I've seen the full ATX kit he has which go up into the drive cage space, but I need to get my head round what's possible a bit more. Like where I'd put the drives (3 x SSD, I x HDD). And how to mount some fans at the front of the case.....

Eventually I'd like to end up with a gtx770 in there, but will probably have to live with the iGPU off the CPU for a while until I've saved up.

So apart from posting the pictures when I've figured it out, I'll keep posting when I get a bit further on. I would appreciate any thoughts from people, I've got a few ideas in my head, but aren't wedded to many of them, so feel free to chip in.

And some of the less interesting bits to help me do the job:

Some JB Weld for re-fixing any standoffs that might need moving, and a set of tools for unpicking cables!

The paracord (it seems a sharp blade is needed to cut this stuff), plus some heatshrink (will use the bigger stuff on my landrover) and some metal cutting disks for the dremel

And a tap and die set for if and when I need to be creating any threaded parts.

Unless a PSU comes up, the next things I'll have will hopefully be some stuff from Laser Hive next week.....

Latest update - picked up my bits after a couple of visits to Hebden Bridge to see Dave at the Laser Hive, and cracked on. Here are the bits

Started off with a dremel, but after some (very) near misses with discs breaking, the stem and discs coming loose and shooting across the garage, we decided to use a jigsaw with bi-metal cutting blades. Made a start with the dremel to get a hole, then cut with the jigsaw - worked quite well.

Old and new, and the (fairly) neat hole cut

Then a bit of work to get the steel drive tray out (making sure to keep all the little bits safe in a bag) so that I can measure the PSU when it arrives and cut a hole for the fan intake.

Assembled the back plates and test fitted the m/b tray - have to cut two standoffs down as the "may" foul the mb when it's installed, and will possibly jb weld a couple more into spare holes on the acrylic tray for extra support. Anyway, the back now looks like this.

I've also bought an extra drive cage from a G5, so I'm going to join the two up and mount them inbetween the front fans and the motherboard (probably using a couple of jb welded standoffs to screw the cages into.

I've also ordered this lot today:

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £159.99 1 £159.99
ASRock Z87 EXTREME6 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £129.16 1 £129.16
Corsair Professional Series AX 860W '80 Plus Platinum' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020044-UK) £124.99 1 £124.99
Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD20EZRX) HDD £63.29 1 £63.29
TeamGroup Xtreem LV 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (TXD38G2400HC10QDC01) £49.99 1 £49.99
Corsair Generation 2 Sleeved 24 Pin Cable (AX) - White £12.49 1 £12.49
OcUK 20x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £10.79 1 £10.79
Enermax T.B.Silence PWM UCTB14P 140mm Fan £7.99 2 £15.98
DEMCiflex Dust Filter 140mm, Round - Black/Black £6.20 1 £6.20

Along with my boat delayed H80, and my gpu/SSDs and Blu-ray drive from my current build, should have some interesting bits to play with soon....

Very nice - I had Dave make a custom piece for the front fans in my build, fits between the front row of bolts up front and stays in place wedged against the existing standoffs in the case

Ta. Yeah, he showed me a picture on his mac of your fan panel, I was quite impressed with it, especially the mounting into the rivets at the bottom. What size fans have you got, 120 or 140mm? I'm going to have a go at making a housing out of some aluminum channel I have, but might fall back to your solution if it doesn't work

Sorry for the late reply - I've been on holiday.

The fans are 140mm and the speaker is of the stock G5 variety
