Hi following my success in cooking cod fillets in an earlier thread :p

I'm moving on tuna steak/fillets.

Couple of questions whats best to buy steak or fillets

The other thing whats tghe best way to cook them grill or fry/griddle them and for how long any suggestions as normal more then welcome

Frying pan, Olive oil, medium heat, flip once. about 6-8 mins each side depending on thickness.

I have never know Tuna to be sold as fillets. They fish is way to big and chunky for that. Tuna steaks are to be treated the same as beef steaks...

Although they are bland. You should really marinade the Tuna in something first.

I would have thought Fillet was the best.

Fillets, steaks, loins etc. All taste the same the only difference is fillets and steaks contain bones. Some fish mongers sell fillets boneless but a majority dont.

That looks lovely so , you reckon about 6mins on each side. Can you get boneless tuna then , or is most of it got bones in.........

All fresh Tuna is boneless. They take it off as a loin and not fillet. Basicaly like a chunky beef fillet steak.

Marinade in something like nandos stuff ?? Or maybe just place in a bowl with lemon juice ??

Whatever you think will taste nice. I would do some sort of mild chilli, lemon, garlic and tomato concoction. Oh with lots of Olive oil. Extra virgin..like a salad dressing.:)

Cool well i'lll be getting some today from supermarket hope it looks as nice as the in the picture :)

Any other suggestions hint or tips to cook tuna ?

well, if tuna is cooked like steak ....

i always do my steak in a griddle. and i NEVER add any oil, i let it sear itself, with the oil etc. inside it. i think 'fried' steak as such, tastes awful

Under impression you need to add some oil as tuna can dry out very quickley

all depends ... how fresh it is, how quickly you cook it ...etc

:)

So should you cook it on a high heat or medium heat ?? I'd thinking on a high heat to seal mositure in and then turn it down to a medium heat ??

Mmm yeah but I don't think i'd like tuna rare it would have to be med - well done I think to start with how long am I looking for that 5- 6 mins each side
Edit I have googled it , but haven't really found a definite answer

Very hot pan, fry on first side for 3 minutes, second side for 2 minutes, and you're done. Should be raw in the middle and cooked for about 1/4-1/3 of the thickness on each side. Absolutely lovely. Be brave - you can't get anything bad from raw fish unless it's been swimming in contaminated water, make sure it's fresh from a good fishmonger and you'll be fine :)
