Sorry chap’s ive got another IT job related question. :D

How many people if any have gone from a normal admin role with a bit of project work attached to it to a consultancy role?

The reason I ask, is I may have the opportunity to move in to consultancy if it all goes well on Friday. It would mean ill be specializing in NetApp, VMware and Exchange, I would also be allowed to continue my Cisco training according them as well. That said though, they want me to become certified in NetApp and VMware.

Thanks

Andy

Am jealous, my employers suck and have just refused me training, so i may have to pay for it myself.

Post i believe. However, there could be elements of pre-sales in it.

OK so with post sales consultancy the customer is effectively paying for your time. You have to be good, knowledgable and generally on top of things.

You may have limited scope to begin with to allow you to build up your skill set.

Pre-sales is a bit more slack on skills because you generally need only an overview of all of the technologies and be able to adapt this to the customer and justify it. Usually comes with more pay and more stress though.

Try and expand the scope to EMC, IBM, HP, etc. Netapp should very loud, win some awards but actually have a small chunk of the VMware / storage market space.

Excellent.

I have just been in admin roles for the past 6/7 years so i am trying to get some idea of what to expect, i do believe thats its a good direction for me to move in to as it could open up new doors etc..

Just checked a few things out and they do seem to provide EMC, IBM etc... so looks to be scope to improve my skill set in these areas as well.

NetApp stuff is good to have. We have just got a new NteApp SAN and I'm hoping to get NetApp certified as I'll be the SAN man.

I already have Exchange 2007 and VMware certs so the NteApp one would go well on my CV.

Thanks chaps.

Right final interview today so fingers crossed it could be a messy weekend if it goes well. haha
