Picked up this S-type 2.7D on Saturday, 2005 2.7D covering 71k, a surprisingly nice drive, not far off the comfort of my XJR at all, really nicely built as well, better than my old X-Type from what I remember.
My CTR Fn2 is now up for sale as unfortunately it just wasn't practical enough since having our 1st baby. We drove it to spain last year and while it didn't miss a beat it's not really a car built for such a trek, hoping the S-Type will be more suited this year.

Plans: Mesh Grill and 250BHP remap.

What are your personal thoughts on the styling?

I personally never really liked them. Do you, or was it more of a value for money oriented purchase?

When they came out hated the styling, it has grown on me a little, and the face lift version more so, can't say I stare out the window gazing at it though. My idea was to get a large diesel car, Fn2 money wouldn't cover a 530d that would be worth considering so the S-Type was my second choice, E-Class 320cdi being 3rd.

I've always thought the facelift massively improved the styling - they're not exactly beautiful, but it turned an ugly car into a decent looking one.

Should be just the thing for long drives, and that remap will make it quicker than the petrol V6.

I love how all of the posts in here are back handed compliments of sorts. :p

Sorry OP.

Welcome to the club!
How much was it if you don't mind me asking?

I don't know much about the diesel engines on these, amazing how someone bought it to do 7k/yr in :p

Suspension is relatively cheap if it needs a refresh, gearbox oil you can do at 100k if you like (may be worth it if it's being towing for example although I can't see a tow bar) but it's £500.

I would definitely not have had the E320 CDI in third.

No, but each to their own.

For 5K the merc was going to be 3 years+ older and 30k+ more milage, hense being 3rd but yeah each to their own...

It's ok I wouldn't create the post if I didn't expect it. ;)

It was £4800 including a 12 month Warranty cover (not that this is probably worth any-thing)

Getting the gearbox oil done next week as I've read 70k for a change is ideally required and will be doing more than 7k a year, intend on using it to run to Spain and back perhaps a couple of times.

Have to agree these are quite ugly, no offence. But if I needed practicality and comfort I would definitely get one at the price they go for these days.

I agree, seems hugely overpriced unless I am missing something? I was expecting you to say around £2.5k where I'd have said that sounds like a great alternative to a mondeo or something similar.

I've always found the centre console and radios in these look mega dated. Like a vectra from the late 90s. Nice cars apart from that, though.

If you have the Nav option it removes most of the Vectra style centre console and replaces it with a fairly primitive infotainment system which makes the dash look miles better. When I was looking at XJs I discounted any that didn't have the Nav fitted for that reason: it uses pretty much the same design as the S Type and doesn't look great.

You can quite easily buy 10 year old versions of any of its competition for this money so there is no way the only E Class you'd have found would have been a 2002.

Given your Jag history I suspect the E Class was never in the running, the E Class is a better car in every way.

Cool, will be worth paying a little more if it saves you hassle/repairs down the line :)
I meant the original owner, assuming you're the second, did on average 7k miles/yr.

For 2.5k you're looking at pre-facelift. A good facelift costs between 3.5 - 6k depending on age, mileage, spec etc. Theres some 08 models with very low mileage I've seen on sale circa 7-8k - no idea if they sell, I'd be shocked if they do.
