Another maths question!

If it is homework, you need to understand why the answer is what it is, otherwise you're not really learning.
 
Isn't it just 1 third to the power of 3 (1/3)^3 ?

That's what I was about to say but the form demands an integer to represent the index. I know what the answer is but this is obviously a test or homework of some sort so I decline to give the answer. It's just doing a disservice to the person who's supposed to be learning.

EDIT: Well that was pointless! SuggestionsWelcome - do you understand WHY it is -3 ?

My answer:

a) 24.693m/s.

b) To calculate this, I first calculated the total distance travelled by multiplying the speed by the time travelled, ie. (58mph x 2.25h = 130.5miles) and (46mph x 1.75h = 80.5miles). I then added the two together to get 211 miles. By then adding the times together (2.25h + 1.75h) and then dividing the total distance travelled (211miles) by the time (4 hours) I came to the conclusion of 52.75mph. This converted to SI units is 24.693m/s.


My only question is whether I should've converted to SI units before doing the calculations, but then I feel like I'm overthinking this a bit too much :p

No, because you’d lose precision converting before the end, unless you were going to keep every intermediate step to some stupid number of decimal places.

Not sure how many sigfigs I’d use for the answer. Might just round it off to two. That’s actually one bit of the question you’ve not answered.
 
The number of significant figures given in an answer should be the same as the greatest number given in the question for that unit, which is 0 in this case.

The question determines the accuracy level. (it's not like they drove at exactly 58 mph, it's an average that would almost certainly not come out as an integer)
