I have now decided to rid my self of my trusty (crusty) Corsa 1.2 8v Montana :D and purchase something a bit diffrent, im looking at buying either a 106 GTI or a Saxo VTS (Are there any major diffrences other than brand, seats and body shape?) Any way what I am getting at is, are there any other cars that are similar to these cars for kind of the same price range (£3000ish) or could some one give ther opinions on the 106 and saxo along the lines of, which would the prefer.

Thanx for any help :)

my advice albeit not very helpful is buy something german... you'll not look back

£3000 is late S14/early S14a territory. Bit of a step up in running costs, but for me insurance was cheaper on the S14a than a 106GTi.

Can't really think of anything German for £3k that will fit the guys requirement, be as fun to throw around as a 106 GTi, and not be older than all of us..

To answer one of your questions, the saxo and the 106 you're looking at are pretty much the same though I think (GT3?) will come in here to tell you the differences between the two.

Personally I'd go for the 106 as they aren't as common (not least in my area).

205 GTi is where it's at :p

106GTI is regarded as a slightly better car than the VTS, think its a shade quicker.

Personally with the saxo image the way it is i would go for the 106, but i totally have the square dash!

I'd personally go for the Saxo. In my opinion, any negligible difference in performance/handling does not justify the far higher residuals of the 106. Yes, the Saxo has a bit of an image problem but when you're only spending £3k, I wouldn't personally factor that into the equation.

Thought of a car you could get though I'm not 100% sure that you'll get one for your budget but a 306 Rallye (think it's a 2.0l). It has 167bhp

Might as well get a GTi-6 though, cheaper and not as stripped out.

Actually, Xsara VTS

GTi-6, didn't know they're cheaper - sorry.

You could get a S1 or S2 106 Rallye, not quite as quick but probably more fun perhaps?

Renault 5 GTT? Renault Clio Williams? Cheaper but probably cost more to maintain...

I'm guessing you want something with respectable handling, small, goodlooking and french?

Uh? I went german, and would love to go back to my previous peugeot!

you don't like the vr6? surely you don't prefer a 306..... no accounting for taste I suppose, wink . I've got a vr6 btw

:)

back on topic.. I suppose £3k is pushing it to get something german newish and sporty.... compromise on the newish bit and get something that will last?

I'd go the 106 GTi route. I was in the same situation myself a few months ago and got a GTi. There's too many Saxos about, so whilst it's a buyers market, residuals are rubbish, and it seems hard to sell one.

GTis on the other hand seem to be pretty rare in comparison, so you might have to travel to find a good, well looked after, non-molested one, but it would hold it's value a lot better, and be very easy to sell when the time comes. Almost all 106 GTis seem to sell within one or two days of going up for sale - there seems to be a big demand for them. When looking I missed out on 3 or 4 cars by a matter of hours (half an hour in one case). I'd imagine those that don't sell have something wrong with them, so if you see one that's been for sale for a while, it's probably a dud.

As far as one being faster, I don't think that's the case. They're mechanically identical AFAIK (possibly a slight difference with the length of 2nd gear in the VTS, but not sure if that's actually true or not). Looks wise, the 106 wins hands down for me, and it doesn't have as bad an image as the saxo either. Insurance was cheaper on the 106 for me too.

sorry I for got to mention that im 19 with a 1 year no claims, which rules out most of the higher power cars. Both the 106 and saxo will cost me £1100ish to insure although the 200sx route is quite tempting I will try some quotes tomorow as they are group 18 and by the sounds of it quite a few people are binning them as they become more popular I assumed insurance would be sky high. Any way guys thanx for your opinions and suggestions, any more would be appreciated :)

If you do go for a gti, make sure you get one with leather/alacantra seats, its the only way to go!!

As much as small niggles annoy me with mine, I do enjoy driving it...and I predict that I will miss how light-footed it feels and the fun of it all when I get something else.
