Another New Mac Owner

I've just been reading the 'official' Apple instructions on replacing the hard-drive, and I think I have managed to confuse myself.

It mentions that once installed you need to "Start up from the Mac OS X Install Disc 1". Without sounding dappy, how do you do this? Do you put the disk in before booting, or after?

Sorry if this sounds like a daft question... but I'm a noob, and don't want to damage my new baby!

Put it in before booting, and hold down the 'd' key.
