Hi folks,

Sorry for posting another one of these threads but I am new here and I really need some advice regarding my new build. PC will be used for a variety of roles including audio and video hub, gaming and general work inc databases, spreadsheets etc.

I will be purchasing a external DAC separately for audio.
I will purchase the ATI 4870 when it is released next week, perhaps 2 of them although I am unsure about the success of cross fire.
I won't consider changing the case, the Silverstone is the one I want.

What do you guys think of my build? I have tried to pick top class components and will be overclocking to an extent. Anything need changing? 4gb rather than 2gb? (Although I currently have 2gb on a laptop and I never run into memory issues).

Edit: What kind of overclock can I expect from this setup? I have just heard rumours than the X38 chipset is quite poor for OC the 45nm Quad CPU's, is this information correct and if so what other combination would be better? I chose the Asus Maximus Extreme due to a variety of positive reviews I read and I have had very good experiences with all ASUS kit in the past.

Price is around 1900 max including Video Card(s), Optical drive(s), card reader and OS (64bit premium vista). Will purchase a monitor separately.

Thanks in advance.

I will ofcourse be posting a build thread with some nice pictures for you to gawp at.

ps. I love the design of your website, very clear and easy to navigate and some good deals.

Do you really need to have DDR3? You could save a lot of money if you dont

I'm not entirely sure, which is why I'm asking for advice :-)

I have read various arguments but I would really like to futureproof (lol) as much as possible. Purchasing outmoded technology just seems like false economy to me. If I buy DDR3 now I will be good for some time to come- well this is my line of thinking at any rate and perhaps it is flawed. I guess a lot of it comes down to wanting 'the biggest and the best' since I have used laptops for the past few years and am now in a position to build a rig (got more space). I am open to suggestions...

Don't worry about saving money, I have budgeted for atleast 1800. Apologies for my essay.

Hmmm...you sure? Anyways about the memory situation, would you agree with me that he should go with DDR2? DDR3 seems like a waste of money at the moment

It has 50 amps on the 12v rail which should be more than enough.

And ddr3 is not worth it yet. I will only be upgrading to ddr3 in a year or so when nehalm is out at a reasonable price.

Ok...since no-one else seems to be helping, how about this?

^^ Drop that cpu to a q6600, Change the mobo to a x38 p5e or a p45, Get rid of the velcio raptor and get another f1 and raid them, Swap the psu for a modular one. :)

Yes swap the PSU for a modular one (sorry, i just blindly added it to basket). He doesnt really need to drop to a Q6600 or drop the motherboard, he's got the money to go higher than that

The Dfi motherboard is better than the asus one.
The q6600 overclocks the same, maybe a little bit better than the q4950 because of the lower multi.

It would be silly to spend money just for the sake of it

Ok, if the mobo is better then definately change it. As for the cpu, they both overclock the same-ish, but surely the Q9450 (not the q4950:p) will be cooler. There's not much difference in the price either + he gets assassins creed with it
