Another new PC thread!

Ok, if the mobo is better then definately change it. As for the cpu, they both overclock the same-ish, but surely the Q9450 (not the q4950:p) will be cooler. There's not much difference in the price either + he gets assassins creed with it

It doesnt run all that much cooler.

^^ Drop that cpu to a q6600, Change the mobo to a x38 p5e or a p45, Get rid of the velcio raptor and get another f1 and raid them, Swap the psu for a modular one. :)

I appreciate all the comments but ideally I would like reasoning behind any suggested changes. I am a little out of touch but I want to learn why A is better than B.

I have read great reviews of ASUS maximus extreme on loads of sites including the respected Tom's Hardware. Why is a P5e better?

The 6600 people mention.... Does the 8mb cache not limit it's performance compared with the Q9450? Remember I am after a performance system, cash isn't so much an issue. I would hate to have to upgrade in 12 months time.

Thanks again

Thats a grand under budget so you can get a new gfx card (or two) what ever os you want, a nice 24" monitor, set of 5.1 speakers and keyboard + mouse.

Q6600 does have less cache but the performance difference is not really noticeable.
The p5e is a very similar board to the x38 maximus extreme which is very similar to the x48 forumla. You can even flash the bios with the maxium's bios.

I dont think the q9450 would last you any longer than the q6600 with a new articteture and socket coming out at the end of the year.

Get that DFI its a very good motherboard. Bargain for that price.

I have read loads of good reviews of the ASUS board and have good experience with their kit in the past, they win loads of awards and generally regarded as the top mobo brand. So.... I'm curious why is the DFI better?

Thanks for help thus far.

Hold up a sec qwerty, you've chose an antec 1200 case, but the OP wanted a silverstone - so I stuck that in. Secondly, you've chosen a DVDRW drive, I chose Blu-Ray because the budget allowed it. I would still go with a ~700W PSU - just to be on the safe side and allow some headroom for other things. As for the CPU, its debatable - I guess its up to him to decide.

EDIT: I'm not saying the q6600 isn't a fantastic chip, because it is. However, if i had the money I would still go for the Q9450 (maybe being newer tech and all)

Sorry didnt see the bit about the case. Yes i have choose a dvdrw because i dont think a blue ray is needed unless the op has specfically specified he watches/burns blue ray movies or what ever.

True, I want a good monitor and a decent keyboard. Audio will be handled by an external DAC hooked upto ARCAM amp and some Monitor speakers so 5.1 speakers are not an issue.

Any suggestions for a gaming 24" panel. I hear the Dell suffer from high latency

Yeh, but blu-ray is the future, and he states that he doesn't want to keep upgrading

Hehe erm I guess im confused about mobo choice. I will drop the CPU down to the 6600 you mentioned and overclock. What kind of overclock do you guys reckon I can get with the 6600 and the Maximus or the DFI?

Cheers

Ok Ok. If I change to DDR2 mobo and ram what mobo should i get. I would really prefer to get a brand I know such as ASUS.

What are the p5.... thingies you mentioned. I see loads of them on the website. Any in particular?
