Hi all,

I'm looking to build a good, fast machine for general use. OS will be win 7 Pro and typical programs I use include the Adobe creative suite. I usually work on large graphics and video files.

I may have a go with some gaming to (heavy Xbox user that the moment).

I have a good case and 3 monitors (2x 19" widescreen & 1 x 21" normal), keyboard and mouse and 2 x 2TB sata drive for storage (raid 1).

This is what I am looking at getting...

I am looking to get a good system that I can build on at a later date by adding more SSD HD's and maybe another graphics card.

My budget for these parts or equivalent is around £900.

Any suggestions on what to drop/replace from that lot?

Thanks.

If you have three screens, then a radeon card so you can use them with eyefinity would make sense. You will need a display port adapter depending on your monitors though.

I will let people more familiar with intel mobos and cpus suggest any further alterations or better offers. Seems ok to me but i'm more familiar with AMD than Intel. I can't see any obvious errors, you have tri-channel RAM spec'd and the mobo supports this.

Good luck with the build

Socket 1155 as suggested above is a much better idea than 1366. Get the 2500k and a Z68 board if you fancy some overclocking. Get a 2500 and a H67 board if you want to leave it at stock.

For those kind of things you'll probably need an i7, unlike its little brother it has hyper-threading. The ATi 6950 has eyefinity so you can hook all 3 monitor up to it.
(most likely need a displayport to DVI adapter)
8GB of RAM in 2x4GB sticks means that you have room to upgrade to 16GB if you think Adobe is maxing it out.
And if you do get into gaming, the motherboard and PSU are both equipped to handle another 6950 down the road.

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM - £227.99
MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE DIRT3 Game - £199.99
Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - £109.99
Corsair Force Series 3 120GB SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (CSSD-F120GB3-BK) - £194.99
XFX Pro 750W Core Edition Power Supply - £72.98
Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit - £65.99
Corsair A50 High-Performance CPU Cooler - £27.98

Total: £907.91 (Inc Shipping)

This but chuck in an Antec High Current Gamer 620w as I doubt you will be going crossfire anytime soon if you mainly game on your 360.

Also change the SSD for the OCZ Agility 3 as it has similar speeds and is a lot cheaper as it's on deal at the moment.

so you didnt take anyones advice of going for a Sandy Bridge setup, if your happy with it, fair enough.
pics of the build?

Nice spec, but how come you did not look at Sandybridge setup which would have been slightly quicker in majority of cases.

I looked at the sandybridge boards but ultimately got the P6X58D-E because I forgot to swap it for a sandybridge board when I ordered! Stupid me!

Very happy with it so far :)

I didn't take any pics whilst building but here is a crappy shot just taken with the phone.

The ATi card just fits with 2mm to spare. Also the CPU cooler allows *just* enough room for the ram heat sink. All very tight but doable :)

To have Sandybridge you need a Sandybridge CPU which you have not ordered. Sandybridge is quicker than what you ordered so i cant see why you went for what you did

Lol. That would have been a total ***k up!

Well I am very happy with it so far and it runs adobe great. So thanks for the suggestions (even if I did manage to mess up the mobo/cpu!)

Just truing to get all 3 monitors working now which is proving a bit of a problem :(

With the card in your basket you can hook 2 monitors up via the DVI ports, but you will need to use an "active mini-displayport to DVI adapter" for the 3rd. Its an M.displayport to DVI adapter with a USB cable for power.

Only the FleX Cards allow you to use 3 without additional power.
