Another one bites the dust :(

don't you guys think all this is to much work for a console. i mean plug and play not plug and fix

Yes it is but what choice do we have? Pay MS £85 only to get a refurb that will likely breakdown again?

My fix was simple, took under an hour and cost me 1 eraser and a little AS5. I would say it's the lesser of two evils :)

well mine died last week. went into local game store on thursday with sog sheet and local manager called head office . they tell him nothing to do with them and call ms. been busy so not had chance to chase it up today.

spoke to trading standars and they said well within my rights to claim from store . told to phone head office and if no joy write in giving them 14 days notice to rectify the situation or legal action ( 14 days is the law ) .

i phone up head office quoting the ref of the convo of thursday. they say we dont do repairs and it costs us to much to give replacements to everyone so you going to have to go through small claims.

get that    SHE SAID TAKE US TO COURT

so letter going in by tmoz and then the fun starts

yep, she said that becasue 9/10 most people will cave in and go MS route, teach them a lesson and take it smalls claim court because i bet they won't even turn up if it goes that far and you win it anyway.

I took mine back yesterday. The place i got if from was brilliant. The guy asked what was wrong and if i had the reciept. A couple of mins later i walked out with a brand new console and my original HDD so i didnt loose any save games etc...

From this thread alone i cant belive how many 360,s have died or need fixing by the user its simply unreal.

M$ should be ashamed of themselves

Can I just ask a question, did they actually check that it doesn't work or anything. Or do they just take your old one and shove a new one in your hands?

Nope the guy never even checked what was in the box. I actually realised when i got home that i never even packed the network cable. I had heard that this place were notoriously strict and you had to show them the fault and if it didnt manifest there and then they wouldnt swap it but this guy was cool. Like i said he even swapped over the HDD for me.

Cool, may just return my broken one in the box my new one came in :D

Ok, it's been a week since i repaired my "ring of death" 360 with the eraser method and it's still running great with no probs despite the hammering my kids have given it while on school holidays.

This really is a great fix and i recomend that people who have no warranty give it a go.

The big thumbs up from me :)

what exactly was the fault. did you instantly get the 3 lred lights when you powerd up, or did they appear after you laoded a game?

Got the ring of death earlier today whilst playing Crackdown (which I happened to buy today) :(
Already on my 2nd console and it only got replaced a little over a week ago... looks like this one is going to have to go back as well :(

The amount of money we spend for this to happen is stupid. Its not like I play on mine that often either!

Emlyn_Dewar - I described the eraser method in this thread, for a more detailed guide go to xbox-scene.

lilpaki - This is my 2nd 360 that went bad, both exactly the same thing, started out with games freezing and the console eventually locking up and when powered off and back on i got the 3 red lights.

Munday - Many of us know how you feel mate, If yours is still under warranty send it back if not give this method a go as it's cheap and best of all it really works.

I can't really understand how this fix isn't as popular as it is, It really does work and is really quite easy to do

Can't decide wether to give this a try with mine or not.

Already bought a core as a replacement (2 days before all the good offers came out  ) and not sure whether to try and fix up my premium and have one downstairs too or to stick it on ebay as a duffer and see how much I can get for it.

The latter will probably now be less as you can now get a brand new core for just £150

Seems like a weird fix? Couldn't you have used thermal pads, or did the RAM already have that?
I'm sure I read somewhere that later versions of the 360 had thermal pads added to cool the RAM as they were running at temps averaging over 60 Deg C without.

Well done on getting it working though! ;)

lordrobs - You may as well give this method a go, what you got to lose? it doesn't involve anything more than opening your 360 and attaching 4 pieces of rubber on the ram chips. If it doesn't work then ebay it.

Andy298 - Thermal pads are too soft, some 360's come with them some don't, eraser is firmer than thermal pads and prevents the motherboard from flexing without crushing the ram chips. Coating the pieces of eraser with thermal paste is my idea and is in the hope that the paste will transfer the heat around the rubber and on to the metal casing. I'm not sure if this works but my console sure does :)

Yeah might as well, haven't been hands on with something technical in years and I fancy a mini project for a couple of hours.
