(plus the extra for saturday delivery).

OcUk case badge, cables, cable ties can wait until next month, with maybe a window and fancy pants light.

Will use the mobo bundled cables plus what ever i have lying around for now. I'm most likely going to be fidling with the build for a bit over the next couple of weeks, decied what drives to have and where to mount them etc, plus not going to worry too much about overclocking to start with, just get it beded in properly first. Then when that's all out the way get some smarter cables etc and tie it all up nicely.
poo-poo'd RAID, just can't be bothered atm.
ditched the 512MB pro HIS as my AGP one has started to get the dreaded fan rattle :(.

So buy this lot for saturday, tart the case up a bit next month, cry about the price drops and then a new DX10 card and Vista at the end of the year/begining of next.

job a good'un?

Nice :D

Don't forget to post pics of your new kit!

Partial to a bit of hot hardware pr0n are we sir. :D

np, will def try to post some pics.

Yep, plus two extra fans for the case as well.
Went for the 1200rpm ones but will try running them at both speeds.

No sign of the City Link man/van as yet. :(

:D :D :D

edit: no slip cover on the gfx card, which is odd?

no, no no! Can't find the arctic silver!

I do have an old tube somewhere but no idea where it is or how much is left and I wanted to use a fresh tube. :(

Also the Akasa case does come pre-fitted with fans, which is odd, as even though the OC page says it does everything else I read said it didn't?

They're Akasa DFS122512L. Not sure whether to leave those in now or put in the Noctua's?

Ah well the joy's of a new build, we'll get there. :)

Well I've found my old tube of AS, definitely can't find the new one in the order, but there isn't a lot left. Hopefully enough to get the job done though. Does this stuff have a shelf life?

Next problem is mounting the mobo, too many screws!! no idea what to use atm.

edit: don't worry, I'll be going off line soon as I need to butcher this PC for parts. Might fire up the old lappy though.

Some pictures as promised. My photography skills suck so don't get too excited. :)

Build went ok in the end, need to contact OC though and find out what happened to the missing AS5. And may see if I can get a refund on the two case fans I bought as the pre-fitted ones seem ok at the moment.

Only one real mess up, which was me spending so long faffing about fixing the mobo to the tray that I fitted it without putting the back plate for the HSF on first. :o

Took longer than I planned. Kept checking, re checking everything, taking lots of tea breaks so as not to rush it and do something wrong. Fitting the Noctua HSF was a bit fiddly but no worse than others I've done.

Once it was all together took the plunge and closed it all up, moved it onto the other room and fully cabled it to my setup before powering on for the first time. And it all worked. \o/

Well, I say all worked. I did have to open the case twice but I blame both of those on ASUS. :-p
One was because the first time I went into the BIOS it didn't show the case fans, they appeared the next time I went in. Must be a feature when setting up the BIOS as it did it to me again later when I upgraded it.
2nd time was because their oh so smart Q-connect for the front case connectors seems to be totally labeled up wrong. I could tell it was when I was putting it in but it still confused me.

Not done any OC'ing yet, apart from upping the voltage on the mem and forcing it to CAS4 as it defaults to CAS5.

Tried out BF2/2142, both running much better and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. which I only had a quick go on but it seems to be just the same as it was on my old rig . So unless there's something I'm missing I'm guessing it is GPU limited and makes no use of more than one CPU core like they said it does.

Also finally gone with XP64 as my main o/s. Had it as a 2nd o/s since launch but never really used it. XP32 license will probably stay with the old PC when I pass it on.

Any Q's about the build or pieces of kit please do ask and I'll try to answer.

Now need to go read up on a few BIOS bits I'm not sure of and maybe look at OC'ing the CPU a bit.

Iam attemping my first build soon and regards to this sentance

'Only one real mess up, which was me spending so long faffing about fixing the mobo to the tray that I fitted it without putting the back plate for the HSF on first'

What do you do with the back plate on the HSF? Can you explain in abit more detail please, iam sure to make this error!

NP. Depending on what HSF (HeatSink +Fan) you buy there will probably be a fixing plate that needs to be fitted underneath the motherboard, the HSF then sits on top of your CPU and srews down through the holes in the mobo to the plate behind.

If you read the manual with the HSF it will explain what you need to do. I kind of knew I would need to do it but completely forgot until I had already fitted the mobo and then got the HSF manual out to have a look at it.

Not a big mess up, more embarrassing than anything, and all it meant was I had to remove the mobo from the mobo tray to fit the plate.

ha ha, you're too kind! :o

Happy? I think so, so far. Definitely a step up from my old rig, just need a bit more time tweaking and playing to see what it's really capable of, not done much with it yet.

Certainly looks nicer and sounds a lot quieter than my old one and I'm already noticing the speed bump in the mem and CPU. My old rig had a X1950pro AGP 512MB in it so GFX are similar to the X1950XT 256 I went for, though the GFX card will probably be the first to get up graded down then line when I go Vista.

So yep, overall glad I did it and glad I finally ordered and built a whole system from scratch, even though I did so much work on the last one it was completely different by the end. Just need to utilise it now to help justify the outlay! :D

Getting a new desk delivered this week so going to sort out my PC corner, if it turns out nice I may post some 'action shots' of the PC in situ. Also going to get some cable tidy stuff next pay day and might go for a window and light to use the PC as a desk lamp on the new desk.

I'd also like to say a quick thank you to you, the forum and OC for all the help, info and advice. Been a great help. Thanks.
