Another project Thread - MR2

Nice. Looks like the one I just bought last week. Time for a cigarette I think.

If you are still working at the same place you were when i last saw it, when it's done i'm gonna have to come have a proper look! :D

Yeah im still working at the same place, but over in the o2 building now, deffinately have a gander when its done

well no pics update until later on, but ive been dismantling bits from the old engine to clean and spray up... i've got a day off on thursday so i think im going to seperate the engine from the gearbox and clean that up so it ready for the new block. I'll be at toyota on thursday too just picking up some odds and ends like new bolts for the cams and crank...

Im having a bit of a dilema regarding the cams at the moment, there are lots of options available:

264 piper regrinds - £200 , but then i would need custom shims i think as they arnt readily availible

264 piper blanks - £400, more expensive, but they are toyota oem spec clearances, so i could use toyota shims off the shelve which makes life easier

2?? piper custom blanks - £400, if i wanted something a bit more lairy i could get some custom made, but i just dont know what, and if they would work well with my mods...

decisions decisions.....

well i've not posted much progress, but there has been quite a bit happening

i've honed the cylinders, cleaned the pistons up, gapped the new rings and installed them (quite scary for the first time doing it) and installed them into the block.

The block has been thoroughly cleaned, painted blue and new shells have been fitted

these were the old ones....

and the crank went in...

pistons being installed with new shells also...

I then fitted a new crankshaft oil seal, and a new oil pump

oil pickup and baffle went on...

I modified the sump so then i could attatch my oil temp sender unit for my new guage, cleaned it all up and sprayed the sump with gloss enamel paint

applied the sump sealant, and torqued down the sump

I then lifted the engine down onto the floor, flipped it over and fitted the water pump assembly

everything seems to be going fine, a few other bits have been cleaned up, and my new piper 264 cams and vernier pulleys have arrived  so i now need to start doing some headwork

Sweet

I really need to fit my oil temp sender. Had the gauge for almost 2 years... about time I got it sorted I think.

Have you ever re-built an engine before? I'd love to get hold of a scrap engine and take it to bits... maybe in the next few years. Haven't really got the space/time at the moment.

No this is the first engine ive ever re-built, i suppose when you look at it as a whole its daunting, but when you think about each stage, bit by bit, its not so bad and quite straight forward.

i then had to do a bit of head work so the lobes cleared, which was time consuming
DSC00495Medium.jpg

the valves were then lapped in, all cleaned up and re-assembled and checked for clearance, with every shim perfect for tolerance:cool:
DSC00498Medium.jpg

the head has been torqued down, the oil cooler, coolant pipes, distributor, alternator and coolant sensors placed back on the engine

the new flywheel and clutch have just been fitted today also, but i havent got any pics of that yet.

I'll watch this closely, i've been thinking about an engine swap in my MR2, but i'm in the process of selling my M5 to my mates old man so until i've decided on a replacement daily driver i've got to keep it on the road to avoid using my bike.

Mines heavily modified, but it sounds slightly tractorish.

well things have progressed, the first 2 pics are after fitting the wiring loom and the intake manifold is just balanced on

It took a bit of time but the cams have been dialled in to piper spec, inlet and exhaust valves opening fully at 108 degrees, it was a bit of a pain but i got it done perfectly after about 2 hours

so the cam cover had new seals on, a bit of sealant around the cam and dizzy humps, as mr2's usually leak oil here after a while, then it was torqued down with new fasteners

DSC00527Medium.jpg

DSC00529Medium.jpg

the engine hooks were then put on, aswell as the throttle body, inlet manifold and cold start injector

and thats about it really, the engine is complete, so i started on the gearbox and took it outside to pressure wash it, let it dry for a while and then i gave it a lick of paint

DSC00540Medium.jpg

just a few bits and pieces to do then ill put the box and engine together ready to go back in the car

Engine looks fantastic

What paint are you using? I'm going to get mine looking nice like that before it goes back in
