another Q6600 thread

Hi all been running my Q6600 @ 3.3Ghz for over a week now with no problems at all just wanted to check something. On Core Temp it says my VID is 1.2750v and on CPU-Z it says it is 1.280v. I assume that Core Temp is telling me the factory voltage and CPU-Z the overclocked voltage? If so then i have a good low voltage chip?

Im using a J&W P45D2-ULTRA board and TRUE cooler. Temp range from 30c idle to 68c full load.

Your VID is the chips required voltage to operate normally at stock speed. 1.275v isn't the lowest VID, but is pretty middle of the road. CPU-Z is telling you how much voltage you have applied via the BIOS to the chip, which is just a smidge over the VID, which is what most people call 'overclocking on stock voltages'. You'll find under load the CPU-Z voltage reading will vary a little bit, often showing less voltage than idle, but most of the time, it should be a little higher (1.30v possibly).

Most Q6600 are good up until about 1.450v, but the lower VID will mean your temps will be an issue before you ever reach there. Higher VID chips can have the same temps as yours at this higher voltage, but it isn't an issue.

I'd push 1.350v into it and try for 3.6ghz. Your temps still have some leeway. As long as you don't push over 80 full load, your good to go.
 
Well my plan is to hit 3.6ghz. Thank you for explaining.

I was running it at 3.6ghz before but wasnt stable and the temps never went above 74c
 
You may find getting to 3.6ghz or higher requires larger increments in voltage, often yielding 2-3 degrees for barely 100mhz of power. Find you're stability spot and stick with. ;)
 
Thank you very much. I think i will just increase it by .1ghz at a time instead of going straight up to 3.6ghz.
 
Had a 1.2750 vid q6600 myself a while back. Ran it on an asus p5q deluxe p45 board. Iirc i needed 1.4vcore for 3.6ghz, 1.3750 for 3.4ghz, 3.0ghz on stock volts (vid). Needed quite a hefty jump though to 1.51 vcore for 3.8ghz, and lapping the cpu and TRUE and a few 2000 rpm fans to keep temps in check.

Suggest you have a look at the intel quadcore database. Some great info there on q6600 clocking.

Cheers Setter. Think i might have to change my fans on the TRUE as i am only using silent Asaka ones at the moment at 900rpm. They are silent but might not be passing enough air through the cooler
 
Upto 3.6ghz i used a pair of arctic cooling 400-1500 rpm pwm fans, in normal day to day use i ran theese at 8-900 rpm, nice and quiet. When i went upto 3.8ghz theese were replaced with sharkoon silent eagle 2000's, ran off a fan controller, quite loud at full speed but great cooling.
 
Well it just so happens i have two sharkoon silent eagles 2000's which i took out of my other case and was wondering what to do with them.

Also, get some ear plugs rob, they are a bit noisy.:D

Off topic: Did you get the new case up and running yet?
 
Yeah it all up and running spot on. Still need to pull my finger out and get it tidied then post some pictures. Just playing a bit Forza at the moment so will do it after.

I will be running them through a fan controller so should hopefully be able to quiet them down a bit
 
Will depend entirely on your particular chip, with mine. I first tested at 3.0ghz on stock volts (vid, find this with coretemp) try to see how far you can get the fsb on stock voltage, you eventually reach a point were the system refuses to post/fails a stress test. Then its time to start upping the voltage a couple of notches at a time. When you regain stability, you can try backing the voltage down again, or push higher.
