Another "Spec Him" thread

The interior is horrendous, a mess of poor asthetics and poor quality materials and the whole car looks like some sort of mini MPV. A slightly older Golf, or perhaps a Skoda Octavia, is simply a better way of acheiving more or less the same car.

The golf interior is utterly horrid, I'd certainly argue that the overall styling of the Mk 2 Leon FR is much nicer than the golf's that the equivalent money will buy. I got bored of seeing tartan cloth in Golfs after a while.

I don't actually think it looks anything like a mini-mpv. In fact, when Walter de'Silver designed it, it was given quite a few styling awards!

All a matter of perceptions though, I would be quite happy with a leon and not fussed by the issues you raise.

You seem to forget that not everyone is so spread sheet analytical about their purchases. Fundamentally the Leon is a good car.

At this budget though it does open up a lot more possibilities inc the Skoda Octavia VRs.

In the 5k budget you could go for a newer Astra as they are comparably cheaper than the Focus. Also an Earlier Octavia VRs.

For a £5k fun car you could get a decent 172/182 if you want to run it and can live with lack of space over the roomier options.

Thanks for throwing in a couple of alternatives.
I drive a Mk2 Octy vRS and that may well be a reason my brother didn't mention the Octy.
He's certainly no badge snob, but may have felt that "copying me" wasn't what he wanted to do - who knows the thought process of a younger brother :)
He doesn't neccessarily need the vRS - maybe an Octavia would be worth looking at.

I hadn't even considered the Astra - I only seem to hear bad things about them here.
Are they really that bad?

172/182 - I'll mention but I think he was looking for something a little larger.

I have an Astra MKIV 1.8 SRI which does the job and has been a good car for me. When I was looking it was either this or a MK1.5 Focus. You would be looking at a MKV in that budget probably with 20-30k miles on. They are cheap to run and insure, same as Focus really.

Focus is technically better.

Ah right thanks for the clarification, but wherever they were built, £5k gets you a MkIV platform Leon but a MkV platform Golf.

Of course if he's now upped his budget, this whole discussion has been fairly pointless :p.

I've passed on all the information from this thread and now I await his decision.
Don't know if he will up his budget or not - but if he does, well I guess I'll get this thread going again :)

Sorry to bring this thread back up.
My brother has decided that he wants to go looking for a car within the next couple of weeks.
He's given himself a hard budget of £6000 - £7000

He's 32 but only been driving for a couple of years, so only has 2yrs NCB - so nothing too high on the old insurance.

He currently drives a 1.9TDI Bora.
He only has Diesel because he inherited the car from my dad - I'm not convinced he does the miles to warrant a diesel.
I do however feel that now he's used to that he will want something 1.8 or above - just my opinion.

So with the slightly revised budget in place - as always your suggestions welcomed.

Octavia VRs is a real contender in this budget.

Shop smart on this and you should end up with something pretty decent.

You could get a very nice clio end of run 182 with circa 10-30k miles on it.

Pleanty of 06 reg Octavia VRs onwards with circa 40-60k miles on for under 8k on autotrader

For some reason he doesn't want to go for the Octy vRS.
Don't ask me why!
I'm buying a brand new vRS in a couple of weeks time and I told him he could have my current one for whatever I'm offered as a trade-in.

So he could have my 56 vRS, 64k miles, FSH for £6500.
But no, he says he doesn't want one.
Which is annoying as I know exactly what condition my Octy is in and I'd like to know it's also going to a good home.
