Basically, I currently have a lovely, 15 year old Fiesta Ghia 1.4. While it's served me well for the last 2 years, I feel like its too small for me right now.
Plus, it's recently been checked at a friends garage and the suspension has seen better days. The ride is very rough, and I'd prefer to get rid sooner rather than later. I'll be aiming to sell within the next 3-4 months, so was curious what you'd suggest to replace it.

Important info!

I'm currently 20, so nothing fancy!
2 years no claims
I don't care about being a fast car, but I'd like something good to drive. I don't do huge mileage (circa 6000 a year), so I dont want a big motorway cruiser saloon either
And of course, bigger than a fiesta internally.

My budget will be £2000 max, though I'd like to stay below this. 1.5k or less would be ideal, though I can stretch if it seems worth it.

Cheers!

Any help would be great

woah this could be an exciting thread :p

It partly depends on how 'cool' you want your new car to be. Your milage is pretty small so running costs wont be HUGE...

Perhaps an citroen xsara vts? :)

I dont want it to look godawful. Thats about it. I'm driving a white 15 year old fiesta at the minute, with a load of dents in the bonnet when some **** decided to go at it with a bat

Last year I got insurance at £900 fully comp (it was cheaper than any TPFT quote for some reason...not a clue why!), so I'm hoping to stay in that ballpark.

Note to posters: He wants a normal car, so lets not have the usual stupid thread full of people saying he needs 200bhp or a hot hatch or something.

'Good to drive' for this person will likely not be razor sharp steering feel or perfect 50/50 weight distribution, but a nice interior, etc etc. He's coming from a 15 year old Fiesta.

I was leaning towards a focus already. I was just curious to see if there's anything as good or better for a similar price. My brother used to have a focus himself and it always felt very smooth as a passenger. He said he preferred it to his current Golf tdi

There isnt anything appreciably better in the value stakes than a Focus. It seems like your idea of a 'nice to drive' car is exactly what I thought it would be - and a Focus petrol is exactly what you need.

Cheers for the advice. As much as I'd love to splurge on a speedy, 'cool' car, I really can't afford it right now. And especially not being 20 :o

Out of curiosity, I had a look at the cost of being insured on my dad's W reg 528. £300 a year for him, £3500 a year with me as a named driver :p

Dragging this back up!

Been looking around, and was thinking of going for something like this. Now, I pretty much have to buy from a dealer, as I'll be paying by credit card. I know it incurs a small fee, but my fiesta seems to be on its last legs now and I was just approved for a 0% credit card today.

Is this the sort of age/mileage I should be going for?

a weird thing about that focus is that it's an 02 reg but still hasn't got a facelift, must be old stock.

It's quite expensive for a 1.8 focus (unpopular for the reasons mentioned above) without a facelift.

I still don't get why people say this, I had a 1.8 Focus and the economy was much better than my Brother's 2.0 ESP

did you both drive exactly the same, on the same roads all the time, did you both .......
you cannot compare the two really unless you drive both the same, which i seriously doubt is the case.

We both drove on similar roads, the usual 30's, 40's and dual carriageways and motorways with the occasional foot down scenario on our favourite roads around here and his MPG was below 30 pretty much all the time, while mine was usually around 35-37, it always seems to be this forum that says about the 1.8 being the pointless car, it just winds me up as speaking from personal experience with both of the cars the 1.8 is most certainly not pointless, however I have not driven the 1.6 to compare it to the other two.

Personally I think the 2.0 is the pointless car out of all of them all as the 2.0 wasn't much faster than the 1.8 and at the same time returned pretty awful MPG considering it's performance/economy...

I know you could also say about the 1.8 only being marginally faster than the 1.6 but saying it's economy is terrible annoys me, you'd have to drive like a real idiot in the 1.8 to get the 2.0 economy :o

So, it seems that the 1.6 is my best option? Not a bad thing as I guess its cheaper to insure and tax too :D

What sort of age/mileage should I be looking at for £1.5-2k?

As mentioned above, a dealer would be preferential as I'm planning to buy on 0% credit
