As per title, I have just come into a bit of cash. So decided I may be putting this towards a new vehicle. I should have about 5k after selling the Focus 1.6.

I want something with more grunt. ATM I'm thinking ST170, the fact they cost naff all to service/parts is attractive with sticking with the Ford brand.

I was initially looking at 318's but I don't think it will excite me after I get over the fact it's a BMW and that novelty.

Insurance must be fairly reasonable.

Fire some more ideas my way.

Oddball suggestion. Buy a C4 Corvette. Easily get a nice one for your budget. Why not get something interesting, for a change - and stick your head over the 'standard' parapet.

Plus servicing is simple, they're tough, designed for long periods without servicing, built to last and bits are cheap (although a few things do have to come from overseas). They're also extremely strong and hard wearing (apart from the interiors). There's an awful lot of aftermarket dealerships, parts and support over here also - and nothing a local garage can't work on.

Get something like a late 80's TPi (you will NOT find something that pulls as well as it for the money, s'like it's trying to make the world go the other way), decent exhaust and intake system, slightly bigger tyres and you'll average well over 20 to the gallon as well - on a run, you can peak 30.

There is simply nothing else like it in terms of road presence, looks, noise, power, handling and reliability in it's class. Stunning bits of kit (I'd have another!) and a real driver's car.

Plus the roof comes off. Yay! (and for me, at least, ridiculously cheap to insure).

Won't depreciate, either. Bonus!

Why not, you only live once.

Of course, you get ABS, power steering, air con, central locking, electric seats, electric heated mirrors, electric windows, heated rear hatch, trip computer, information centre, etc etc as standard :)

Oh and LSD is standard too, in all models.

Availiable with a 4+3 Manual overdrive, 6 speed manual and a 4 speed auto.

Perhaps not, but is the rise in insurance cost worth the difference. I know I wouldn't be paying it that's for sure.

Who did you go with for your insurance, Lashout? Always fancied an old Corvette.

Adrian Flux - Extremely reasonable.

If you do though, I'd recommend getting an 80's one - and not a 90's one. Yes, the interiors are harder wearing and less rattle prone but they loose all the great American detailing that makes them interesting - they're just Europeanised in the later ones and very bland (hence why I sold '95 one). Plus the seats in the earlier one are actually much better!

Things like billet GM belt buckles and clips, little details like that. Plus the digi dash WINS.

Also, the later LT1 engine, whilst 50-70BHP up on the L98, just feels limp wristed in comparison (although obviously, past 90 it's easily apparent which engine has still got plenty of go left - but when can you do that these days) - So I'd recommend a Tuned Port Injection L98 for a daily driver.

I'm 18, I'll take what I can get, I'm surprised they would even insure me.

And I did not say it was reasonable.

If I had £5k to spend on a car which didnt have a BMW badge, I would be test driving:

Mondeo ST200
Some sort of Seat Toledo/VW Bora with a half decent engine.
