Ok, I will concede, the maths is a bit more complicated that I first gave credit.

A 2.35:1 film on a 65" screen would be 56.7"x13.57" (769in²)
The same on a 55" screen would be 47.9"x11.49" (550in²), so roughly 29% smaller over all, even though the actual screen is only 15% smaller.
