To add to my recent purchase frenzy in the past few days, I am now looking for a good NAS drive that's as easy to use as my previous external Western Digital My Book.

In some ways, that did function as a NAS drive because it was connected to my iMac that was on 24/7 and I stored pretty much everything on there accessing it from various machines via the iMac. However, the drive as how now gone along with the iMac so I am looking for something to replace it.

I'd like a good NAS drive that will give me decent speeds. I'm guessing USB3 speeds aren't possible on NAS drives? Storage wise, well I'm going to start with 3-4GB and expand at a later date.

Budget - hmm... Honestly? I'd say absolute maximum of £180.

Thanks in advance.

Just done a search and found a lot of people high recommend the Synology drives, particularly the DS214. This is at the top end of my budget so considering it's little brother the DS214-SE.

So many choices!

I have a Synology DS213 with two WD Caviar Red 3TBs in it and it's brilliant. Gigabit Ethernet connection makes data transfers pretty nippy.

Total cost for the NAS box + drives was £475.
