Afternoon OCuk Phones!

It is that time again, my contract is due in a week or 2 and I am looking at my next handset choices.

I currently have a C902, it has been ok I suppose in the last 18months, replaced once, and just recently the buttons have fallen off. But my phones tend to get abused and well travelled.

I suppose it is time for me to get a smartphone, something more up to date, functions, net/wifi maybe, touchscreen blah blah.

I really cannot stand qwerty keyboards so I think Blackberry/Milestone is out of the question.

I text, make calls, surf the net, thats about it really. No real need for a super duper mp3 phone.

I am happy to take a 24month contract to get costs down, or switch providers etc. So here I am looking for some advise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

You could just do what i did...

With a tarrif that has more minutes.

Well, I suppose there's the obvious, the HTC Desire which everyone is foaming at the mouth over, and it's not too expensive. Theres two threads on these forums which you could take a look at which refer to pricing and such, and that's released the end of March/beginning of April. Theres also the HTC Hero which is pretty well established and will be getting the Android 2.1 update in the future, or it's successor the HTC Legend.

If you were on a budget the Nokia 5800 is not a bad piece of kit for the price, it'll do everything you want it to, although the performance isn't mind blowing. (http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_5800_xpressmusic-2537.php)

Theres also the Samsung S8500 Wave which is due to be released in about April, and the specs look pretty nice aswell, for a good price. (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_s8500_wave-3146.php)

Those are just a few I'd look at at the moment :)

Crumbs well I can't remember the last time I actually paid for a handset!!!! :)

What's on the freebie lists?

The HTC's look really good, I am rather tempted.

Is it a good idea to chase something Android based such as the hero for pure OS quality/expandability/compatability?

The HTC Hero and Nokia 5800 should be free on £25 pm contracts, and the Desire and Legend should be free on £30-35 pm contracts, though you might have to enter into a 24 month contract.

I haven't really had much experience with Android, so I'm probably not the best to ask. Going by what others say, and the open source-ness of the OS they should be pretty good.

I have a Desire on pre-order, which I'm quite excited about :)

Ok thats great thanks for the info!!!

I am on o2 and they have the HTC HD2 on their books at the moment, wonder if I can swing one for free. If not I might see if anyone at work has the 5800 I can borrow to have a play with.

I don't know why they don't offer any other HTC's.

I was waiting in the hope that the Hero would drop in price when the Legend is released.
From what I've gathered its pretty much an updated hero, not in the same league as the Desire

I just sort of assumed

Desire - £35
Legend - £25
Hero pushed down to- £20

can they really have the legend at £35 the same as the desire when its inferior? or have I been a bit naive

I think that HTC have marketed the Legend at a different market. It isn't as good spec wise, but the design of the phone, and the aluminium body are pretty sexy. I guess it's kind of a trade off - design vs performance.

Oh I didn't know the legend was inferior to the hero spec wise. I'm not all that bothered about the design although I would probably get a long contract where durability could be pretty handy
hmm

ahh right thanks. I've found the Legend for apparently £25 pounds here

which looks like a good deal for me..I'm a complete phone noob though. Is this a good deal? what about internet? It doesn't mention internet costs :S (i made a thread but here might be a better place to look for advice)

That doesn't look like a bad deal to be honest. Generally, Vodafone offer 'unlimited' (i.e 500mb per month) internet for an extra fiver a month in some form of a bolt on I think.

There's a review of the Legend (link below) with some nice pictures :)
http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile-phones/review/2010/03/10/HTC-Legend/p1

If I were you I'd spend a few hours searching for reviews and hands on videos for different phones, and then deciding which one would suit you the most :)

I've been looking around for a while now and I am fairly confident I want the hero or the legend. I've decided I'll wait to see what the vodafone website says when they start selling it. If its the same price that's fine, or if its more I'll just get it through this website instead

One thing I will say is that with a smartphone you are in a different league when it comes to useage, make sure you have a web bolt on or your bill could get pretty nasty if you decide to use the browser.

I haev an HTC Hero and I swear by it. Its easy to use and does everything I want it to do pretty much effortlessly, so the Legend would be a really nice upgrade, but Im not overly convinced that the phone is worth the premium that companies are putting on it at the moment, as whilst the screen is a lot brighter there doesnt appear to be that much of a difference between the Hero and the Legend, but for £25/month you cant complain as the lowest you could realistically expect to get a Hero would probably be around £20.

I've seen it around the recent threads that the Desire can also be had at £25 for a competitive contract compared the Legend (mobilephonesdirect). For similar packages and the same price surely it has to be the Desire over the Legend.
