Its a matter of opinion whether any F30 3 Series is decent
It has the best infotainment system and the best engines/gearbox so from a technical perspective its the best car of its type, but for everything else - which I suspect is more important in this case - both the A4 and the C Class are better cars in my view.
The market is also absolutely full of zero spec 320d's, which are fairly miserable things. The odd high spec example tends to be disproportionately expensive.
Newer than 2014.
Diesel - we're covering around 1800 miles per month and looking for 50+ MPG
Manual gearbox.
Just as many toys (heated seats / cameras etc) as the Focus
how come you're averse to automatic ? lot's of miles => motorway jams, urban crawling - I'm looking forward to an asin/zf torque convertor gearbox in next car.
to wit - newish peugot 308 ... which, might even have android auto https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202106083604250
with warranty left, that should give protection with the high mileage.
Many years ago (in my youth) I recall sitting at the traffic lights in my 1992 Imported Pulsar GTI-R with a massive Jasma exhaust thinking to myself how fast, loud and cool this was . . .
Then a red 8.0L (?) Dodge Viper drew up alongside me reminding me of my place
I'm not averse to automatics but my wife is! Have you ever tried advising a woman of the most suitable car for her requirments when one of the choices is an auto and she has driven manual all her life!
Many thanks everyone for all the suggestions (even the crazy ones) threads like these remind me why the OcUK forum collective is such a gem for advice and information. I'm thinking we'll narrow down to a few choices before test driving and hopefully purchasing.

ZF TC automatics ... to compensate, they can have paddles though (for the playstation generation), with direct change to lower cogs, and, improved mpg (urban use, anyway),
and, are maybe a good bridge, towards electrification terminus.
Skodas are very good options, I had the old vRS petrol Octavia, but then my mum bought a diesel estate version after seeing what I got in terms of space and spec for the money.
Have you considered a hybrid? You’ll get 50mpg+ out of those. And for those suggesting BMW330 /335 diesels good luck getting over 38mpg except on a motorway run.
If you want reliability, consider a pcp or lease. Think of monthly costs rather than sinking in big ££ to a depreciating asset.
"Alternative Suggestion" is an E92 M3 would be a safe place for your money.
You could pick up an Manual Coupe for that money, and it should hold it's value well, so you might pay a little more in fuel and repairs, but you will save on depreciation.
