hey all,

I managed to pick up a virus over the weekend. Something call "IE AntiVirus" which did the usual trick of changing your home page and try to make you think that you have to buy their antivirus to remove it...

Anyway, I managed to rid my self of it, but I'm left with something related but strange.

Every time I open IE, my homepage has been changed to "searchpiece.com" and hangs. I've had a look in my reg and found that in HKCU\software\microsoft\IE\main\ the following values have been changed;

Local page - www.searchpiece.com
search page - www.searchpiece.com/search-results.php?q=iesearch
start page - www.searchpiece.com

If I change these values back to what they should be it works fine, until I reboot the laptop and then I'm back in the same situation.

I have Symantec 10.2 Corp installed on my machine with latest def's, but it has failed to pick up anything. I've also got Malwarebytes installed which also doesn't pick anything up.

Is there a way to track whats accessing what at start up so I can find the bugger thats changing these settings???

I've run Hijack this and the results are posted below.

If anyone can help, I'd be forever in your debit.

Cheers

disable system restore
remove whatever av you've got now

run..

ccleaner slim
nod32 av trial
spybot s&d
adaware
avg antispyware (remove this after)

put firefox on with adblock plus and Easylist subscription (do this on your pc too)

not sure, all was well, until my Mrs used the laptop.......

one question;

your last point about installing fire-fox with adblock plus and easylist subscription, what does this bit do??

I'd rather not use fire fox, I'm a IE boy ;)

Does doing this work on all virus's?, a sort of standard answer? If so I'll get all the programs and save the details to my machine just in case..

tends to work on every pc i use them on

hijackthis is good to run too

firefox & adblock plus stops adverts and spam / spyware sites

plus firefox is 10x the browser ie tries to be ;)

firefox is 10x the browser ie tries to be ;)

nice.

I'll crack on with this and see how we go. Nod32 picked a fake systray app straight away, I reckon that this is what was changing my IE settings, but I'll do the whole process and see what happens.

Hijackthis, looks good, but I'm not sure I understand everything it puts out. I mean, I can understand the reg keys and logs of files, but it keeps saying that it might not be infected so I'm nervous about removing anything.

I like a AV program to say, "thats your problem, this is the fix, I've just do it for you. Enjoy!!"

if only......

only use the admin account when you need to, the rest of the time, be logged in as a standard user (especially the gf)

stops 90% of crap

nice one bledd,

That has fixed my problem!! I reckon I'll keep hold of these app's....... just in case......

:)

i'd remove AVG antispyware (or at least disable it's resident scanner, and stop it starting on boot)

it's good practice to use spywareblaster (update and protect) -ooh, wasn't in that list, it's decent though

and spybot s&d (update and immunize)

those two stop a lot of spyware / cookies from being able to get on your machine
