Well I guess this thread is likely to turn into a "why spend more than xxx" but I'll give it a go..

I've been working hard recently, and decided to treat myself. I'm after ideally, a Omega Planet Ocean :

Black bezel, with a leather strap.. although I am open to suggestions.

However, the problem is I think I may be stretching my budget a bit far to get to this.. is it possible to get the Planet Oceans for around 1k on the second hand market?

Or what realistic discount could I get on the high street? Any help/input appreciated!

metal straps are made of win.

and by win, i mean metal, which wins over leather.

Couple of things. One, that strap is rubber. Two, buy it with the bracelet and the strap as an extra if you will ever want the bracelet. It's cheaper that way around.

Good choice by the way. Used Planet Oceans go from £900 at the bottom end to about £1200 for a recent mint one.

I thought the leather ones had the stitching, and the rubber ones look distinctly more... rubbery??

Thanks for the valuation.. would definitely pay around that for one of these... anyone know any good second hand forums?

I very nearly bought that one myself, you'll struggle to get it for much less that £1400 and I couldn't find one second hand. Also I tried it on in a jewellers and didnt like it as much as I hoped. Make sure you try it first if possible as they are big watches and for the amount you are spending you'll want to make sure you like it!

I ended up going for this one which I love but cost me more than I was planning to spend (~2.5k).

I have that watch only with the orange bezel. Cannot recommend it enough and the amount of comments i've had is unreal. Moreso than my Panerai which is worth considerably more.

And yes the strap is made of rubber. The strap and deployment clasp to buy seperately are ~£250.

Nothing really to look out for, they are very robust watches, to co-axial movement is one of the best out there (in this price bracket at least). They hold their value fairly well, i think you'd be doing well if you got one for circa £1200.

Good luck, you won't regret it. :)

Would quite like the one with the orange bezel, although I think it may be a bit too loud for everyday wear for me..

Most of the online places I'm finding are about £1400 for the watch.. is it realistic to get anywhere near this price in a jewellers on the high street?

I don't think it's out of the question, though bear in mind that the prices have recently increased. It was priced at £1875 when I purchased but has now increased to £2000 retail.

Still, discount is available, i paid £1500 iirc then got a bit of discount on the rubber strap and deployment clasp.

I would recommend going to an independent jeweller as apposed to the likes of Goldsmiths etc.

If you are flying from one of the larger airports then you can call ahead to one of the jewellers in duty free and they will normally get near to the best online prices. As junglist said, you can also get a better deal in the high st by using an independent store.

Just to reiterate my point before, do go and try them on. I was the same as you with the orange bezel, it was just a bit loud and I wanted something I could wear for work and casually.

15-20% of high street price

cheapest used one I have seen was £1100 but most are £1200

may be a bit cheaper on strap as opposed to bracelet

try tz-uk

I bought the chrono version with bracelet for £1400 so it should be definately possible to get the non-chrono fro sub £1k

Matt.

seems good prices, the £1100 one is a 42mm which does fetch a little less

Do you have the one with the metal bracelet or the orange strap? Do you have any pictures of it on your wrist please?
