Hi guys

On a budget of 6k max, what car would you recommend? This will be my own money instead of my usual "get a loan for an expensive car" route.

I only do about 15 miles a day to work, plus recreational, so about 25 miles per day average and a 140 mile round trip to my girlfriends house every other weekend. Dont want something that will cost me a fortune in fuel, but would like something with a bit of grunt! I have had a little think about it and have got a few ideas

Possible fuel saving option: VW Bora TDI 130 sport (cheaper than the golf, but would push my budget to 7k which I dont really want)

The Honda Options....mainly as I know they are fairly solid cars
Honda Accord Type R
Honda Integra Type R
Honda Prelude Motegi (if I could ever find a decent one)

Skoda Octavia vRS

Ford Focus - if possible ST170

I value all your opinions, including mondeo, rover, etc :D cheers guys.

Im one of those guys who has one of those pushbikes that is worth as much as a (saw on an earlier thread) Lexus Soarer! I couldnt bring myself to sell it though to fund my motor.....love the riding too much :D

I didnt know they did a 180bhp version of the bora. Although the Octavia is a skoda, I do like the interior and it is cheap for what you get.

Ok you asked for it :p

Mondeo ST200! Hurrah! 200bhp! Hurrah! Recaro stuff etc, hurrah! Imperial Blue paint etc! Hurrah.

Hmmmm, £6k though. Thats like... 528i money..

I have had the same dilemma recently and today I put a deposit down on an Octavia VRS. Pick it up tomorrow :D

Go with Fox on this one, good overall package.

Example being, there is a new shape Ghia X Mondeo V6 (in blue) with 28k on the clock for £6,000 at a dealer near me.

I love the ST200. I just don't think it's worth that much at all.

A normal 2.5 V6 Mondeo isn't actually loads less bhp. OK you don't get Recaro seats but I dont think these alone warrant the price hike.

If I had 6k I would probably look at 5 series, A6 and Mk3 Mondeo 2.5 GhiaX.

You would get an overall example of a better car going the Mondeo route, however a 5 series and/or A6 are both better cars than the Mondeo so it's a tough one.

I wouldn't like to decide until trying out all 3 options.

Things like Integra Type-R are brilliant cars but knowing I would be doing almost 4000 motorway miles a year I wouldnt get one.

The ST200 is quite special though, holds its value better and the extra 35bhp is noticeable. They also have different suspension - not lowered, different.

I'll start off by pointing out the OP has asked what I would buy for 6k, so I dont need anyone moaning about my input.

You also dont mention how much you can afford on insurance, so I'll just imagine you are me and insurance is irrelevant.

From my current experience I would get a Fiat Coupe. You can get a fantastic one for that kind of money too.

Found this one on autotrader. Looks like a real minter.

After that, I'd be after an Evo. I was taken out in an Evo 4 years ago and was completely shocked by the performance. I'd love to have one myself now.

Evo 4

If I was going to listen to the nagging in my ear and get something sensible, then it would be an Alfa 147 JTD.

20v turbo used to be a "dream" car of mine.......although I dont think I can go back to fiat after having owned them for the last 3 years.......
Any idea of running costs of an evo 4? looks pretty cool, but I can imagine that it likes to drink!
Insurance is pretty much irrelevant to me, as I live in a v low crime zone, with my car garaged, etc.

I have no idea about the running costs. I'd imagine its the kind of car you go to a specialist to get work done on it.

The Fiat Coupe aint no normal 'fiat' though. If you took a look at one in the flesh, sat in it and took one for a test drive, you'd love it.

However you would have to get a kit for the coupe though. Either

PS, this is Mavric's car. He's a Fccuk hero. 500bhp.

Dont get me wrong....I absoloutely love the car, my neighbour used to have one, but its known that they cost a lot to maintain. I would love an LE. Ive had so many problems with my fiats that it has put me off them considerably. Im guessing your the proud owner of one? care to enlighten me of typical cost of ownership?

Accord Type R > Mundano????? Although Mileage will probably be higher certainly. Mundano = good all round choice

Reasonable on the e39 5 Series, I don't advise an e38 728i as economical motoring (every part seems to demand a Camelot jackpot!)

My dad has an e39 528i, 34MPG average (!) servicing read "Independent specialist" spares read "Euro car parts" you won't go far wrong.

Why have a Mondeo when you could have a BMW 5 Series, and probably the best 5? ;)
