Another Whats that insect thread

Not a Queen Wasp and no, I haven't set the house on fire.

However we have been steadily getting a flow of these coming inside the house from somewhere, haven't identified where as yet, any clues please;

Sorry I didn't look long enough to realise it was yellow(I thought it was grey). Looked like a fly and its in a house therefore I rushed to state the flawed obvious

Ive had a quick look but strangely it has a black tail, the wasps i have looked at on the internet have striped yellow and black tails, this just has yellow on the mid part of body.

Looking at your picture it still has small parts of yellow on the tail - but the one in my house is completely black.

looked up Google Images and pretty sure its not a cluster fly.

Drone fly seems to be the closest comparison to what is in my house, although most pictures of the drone fly still show some sort of pin stripe yellow on the tail.

Scratch that i think reading up it has to be a drone fly. Well done Mynight

yep id say so, ive been bitten many times whilst night fishing, they hurt like hell

In the additional images there's a few that look mighty similar. A subset of hoverfly.

6legs, single yellow band under its head(?) part in the middle of the band down centre of back. Round black backside.

Edit: I think skodamart has it with that bbc link. If it is kill it fast, quick and thoroughly! In my experience they pack quite a bite; would make a bee/wasp its bitch in seconds

I don't know if were looking at the same page but image 7 looks like some kind of clear butterfly?

Anyhow I Googled horse fly and Im not convinced Im afraid.

How much do exterminators normally cost? Or best solution to get rid anyone?

What colour is its underbelly? Horseflies look like they continue the pattern underneath and the hoverfly I linked to has a black belly.

If its hoverfly then no issue it doesn't hurt and you'll just have to find out where they're coming from. Give them a boot and they'll move on. Horsefly is probably worth a call to an exterminator as one of them is nasty enough let alone a nest. As for cost it cost me £500 to have rat traps/poison laid at work probably a bit less than that if you shop around and its a house rather than commercial. I always thought they only grew near still/slow moving water .

Edit: yeah marshland, still water and soggy ground soil seems to be their preferred environment. Got any old puddles/marshes/lakes nearby?

Are you being serious? They're flies, you don't need to hire an exterminator. Just let them back outside! I don't want to cause undue alarm but outside is full of bugs that can come in
