Got to do a change in a few hundred miles and am having trouble choosing between the following brands:

Fuchs TITAN XTR 10w-40 High Performance Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil
Motul 6100 Synergie+ 10W-40 Gasoline and Diesel engine oil Technosynthese
Mobil Super 2000 X1 10w-40 Semi Synthetic Engine Oil
Millers Oils XSS 10w-40 Semi Synthetic Engine Oil
Shell Helix HX7 10W-40 Semi-synthetic Premium Engine Oil

The first two are ~£16 the other three are roughly ~£21 (this is for 5 litres), im leaning towards either Mobil or Shell because i've seen their name in advertising a lot so they must be better (/sarcasm).

Any advice? thanks :)

P.S: almost forgot, cars a 1990 Supra twin turbo.

Just buy the very best, whats the point in saving 15 or 20 quid.

They all look semi synthetic, get some fully synthetic thats usually best.

What do Toyota recommend ?

They will all be pretty much the same?

I'm sure Simon or someone like that can give you much better technical answer, but I imagine that since they are all the same weight and semi synthetic and similar price they will be as good as each other.

What I use and my engine insides are still inside the engine.

Can be had cheaper than opie oils too fwiw.

Yeah Dad's engine builder gives us a good price on any oil we need :).

As the Millers CFS was the only oil I could find in the garage in the right grade when changing the lawn mowers oil that's what it's using too :D. Maybe a tad overkill for it :p.

wont competition oil be less "durable" due to shorter intervals so wont be made to stand being exposed to blow by for long periods of time etc

Fuchs is very, very good as is Mobil.

Millers have a good reputation too.

Don't know much about Motul, and I don't know who actually makes Shell Helix.

To be honest much of this is almost irrlevelant. As long as the oil meets the standards your engine needs (ACEA number, or VAG telephone number) it's Ok to use. Engines that use 10-40 in my experience are not too fussy.

Loads of indie garages are using carlube oils these days, which normally I wouldn't go near.

My step dad who has been building engines and cars for the past 20-30 years is adapamant that fully synth should not be used unless you can be sure the car has only had fully synth in it in the past....

Is this true?
