I've just been again looking at the deals this week and i'm wondering will my board (see spec) support another of these cards in crossfire without the need for a master card? I read a review on toms and it said its definitely possible with the newer drivers, but want to check, otherwise its a bit of a wasted spend.

Cheers

As far as im aware it will be possible but it aint supported yet. I seem to remember something about late may. Maybe some one could confirm?

As far as i know its just rumours that the x1800's will not require a master card at the minute, and the drivers to allow it are supposed to be the 6.5's which are released beginning of May, so best just to wait till they come out, and see. :)

I hope this sees the light of day, could quit fancy another x1800 altho it seems a little overkill as I will probably do a complete upgrade at christmas.

It looks like it's going to be limited to the X1800GTO as the top card, as anything else will be too much info to put across the PCIX bus. A couple of reviews of the GTO on the net have said that they were expecting the beta driver with dongleless crossfire support to be supplied to complete the review, but it never came. There is a pic on the net, I forget where, that shows X1800GTOs in dongleless crossfire. I'm sure if XTs, for example, were capable then they'd have been more keen to show that instead.

looks like you are right, definatly the 1300 and 1600 anyway

"A new ATI advisory is out, and it looks like ATI fans are in for an interesting surprise; X1300 and X1600 won't need a master card. We confirmed this with a few AIBs over the last few hours, but it appears that ATI will release a new driver soon that enables Crossfire over the PCIe bus on Radeon X1300 and X1600 video cards - eliminating the need for dedicated master cards. "

"Radeon X850 and X1800 will still require a master card to enable Crossfire. Radeon X1300 video cards are already filling the channel here and there, but Radeon X1600 is still not expected to hit channel shelves until December. "
