Another x1950 AGP Question

I've used Nvidia all my life.

Now I'm doing the jump to this ATI AGp 512mb x1850 turbo, and what's the best drivers for it? I've read that the Catalyst Control Centre that comes with the drivers isn't very good, so what's the deal with that? Can I get drivers that don't have this CCC thing, and if it doesn't can i still tweak the card like choosing AA settings and AF settings etc etc

My 430w Enermax had trouble with my x1950PRO, worked for a while, then the display would go blank every now and again and then eventually it wouldn't power on with the card in. Put my old 6800GT back in and it worked fine.

Upgraded to a 520w Corsair and now I can run the card perfectly. I'd reccomend upgrading your PSU if you can.

My spec for comparison is -

A64 @ 2.3Ghz
2 x HDD
2 x CD Drives
1950pro

Which version did you get pcie or agp? Because i think with agp due to two molex connectors you can split the power with a molex input from 2 molex leads (as in say psu has 2/3 long leads with a few molex on each).

Hi,

First post so play nice. I have an ageing AGP system (P4 [email protected]/1Gig ddr400/9700pro on an Abit be7 mobo(agp4x) Was wondering how much I would benefit with buying the sapphire 512MB x1950 AGP card with this system (will system bandwidth cause bottlenecks?) and also whats the PSU requirements, I have an enlight 350W PSU which according to the net - 26a on the 12v. I play a lot of FPS games (FEAR, Doom3, Quake4, HL2, etc) and was wanting to play them the way they're supposed to be played but don't have the £££ to build a new Conroe/PCI-E system.

Please advise. Cheers.

I have been to hell and back with a BE7 and 1950 pro AGP

I will update the original thread with the fact that I now have a new motherboard: you have been warned

Shouldn't be. As 3d mark 05 is mainly gfx card based. It should only help on the score with regards to the cpu tests which is just 2 tests.

Bought a msi rs3m socket 478 mobo from ebay for next to nothing due to dmsims prob but will prolly test with be7 first. trying to prepare for a x1950 for as little coin as possible now, just need a new psu, which ones have people had success with for AGP based systems and this card?

You shouldn't have issues with any decent PSU that can power the card, one thing to be aware of is that you'll need a backwards compatible PSU if it is ATX 2.0 (all are that I have seen, might be a spec requirement) so you can detach the extra 4 pins on the 24 pin section (or use a 24 - 20 adapter) for a 20 pin motherboard.

Do you plan to keep it awhile and use in a later upgrade or do you literally want the bare minimum to comfortably power your rig?

From the +12v rating of that PSU you have I'd recommend you try it before splashing out as it may well be fine!
