Answer me this....

When you are 85 with no other transport and you need to get to the shops, is it going to kill the person behind just to do 40mph in a NSL zone? If they cause you problems then just step on the gas and go past them? I really don't really see the big deal with people going slow in NSL areas.

Where do you live out of interest? You'd probably have a different opinion if NSL roads were part of your day to day driving - there isnt always opportunity to overtake people even doing 40, you instead have to sit behind them. For miles. And miles..

A good place to work this one out would be Henley ( I'm at college there ), many maniac students in 1.2L cars racing around, and many 120 yr old coffin dodgers.

Sometimes what fails me is how the same old woman i see every day feels the need to bounce her Mk1 Clio off the rev limiter to pull away at literally 3 or 4 mph , or how college students feel the need to wheelspin whenever they pull away. Gah.

In response to the OP I would say I just don't know. Some "petrolheads", who presumably already completely overestimate their ability, seem to think that this assumed ability won't diminish with age.

Basically I think I've answered this question far too seriously but some "car enthusiasts" have an absolutely awful attitude and need to get over themselves, to be quite honest.

Well I DO have a problem with people that do 30-40 in an NSL.

What's to be confused about?

To get to work I used to have to do 7 miles of NSL at one point. There was a single overtaking point. If something else was coming, even with 600bhp, you'd be stuck behind the biddy in the Jazz, and it was always a Jazz, for the entire duration. It's just annoying.

Who are they anyway? Get off my road - soon I will pay £430 a year tax, what right does a Honda Jazz owner have? They only pay £35 tax. GET OUT OF MY WAY!

I do occassionally get stuck behind them but generally there are opportunities to go past.

Most of the roads around here, leading away to other towns are small, twisty, tractor ridden lanes. If you get stuck behind Dorris doing 30MPH in her micra, braking for everything that comes the other way, braking for corners that your eyes can't even detect are curved, braking for cateracts, and you have ZERO chance of getting past for 10 miles, you too would be cursing at them to just hurry the hell up.

They cause traffic jams, they cause other motorists to take "opportunities" to pass which they shouldn't do (I won't, I've been in a car that has done just that), yet most STILL feel the need to cut corners even at 25MPH

I feel my argument is justified.

Well that isnt the answer as i recently discovered, a month back we got my granddad (89) a taxi pass instead. Don't know how this works in all counties but in surrey they get massive discounts if you apply for an OAP taxi pass. This actually also works out cheaper, as running cost of a car are no so high and old people do such a limited millage, whats the point. 'The old git' is now happy as he doesn't almost kill himself and everyone else in the area every time he drives, and were happy as 1 less slow person. Tho as we have already mentioned maybe more jobs for taxi drivers to do is an even worse thing? ;)

In response to your other comments, yes some people may overestimate their driving abilities but people need to be doing 60 not 40. I dont know bout you but my life would take much longer to get on with if i drove everywhere at 2/3s of the speed, strangely enough every journey then takes 2/3 as long...? :S

Edit - 3/2 as long sorry ;)

No ta, I don't want to be labled at "the worst driver in the UK" ;)

It's not as if I want them to do 60MPH or break the limit. 50 would be nice.

The worst is when you get a roundabout and an old person decides the roundabout is his/hers and cuts in front of you, luckily you can usually tell before getting to roundabout on there dire driving.

People who feel the need to cut across my nose when I'm waiting to pull out of a T junction turning right.

How do they manage to come so close to slicing my Manta in two?

EDIT

Generally old people

old people for sure, this week alone i have seen 4 elderly people in a volvo 340 with combined age of 500 go through a red light into a heavy stream of traffic, they were let in gently thankfully, then approaching a red light further down the road they failed to notice the car in front had been stopped a good 20 seconds, at which point they slap the brakes on so hard the car nearly does a stoppy!! also a driver in a clio failed to notice that the green arrow means that traffic can move forward and right turners which have a red light have to wait for a filter he dice with death and tried to sit in the middle and wait for a gap, it really does make me wonder how they avoid accidents.
