I live at Number 50 and a friend lives at Number 58. There are 3 houses between us.

If you were at his and wanted to explain where I lived relative to him which one of the following would you use (if you ONLY had these options)

"He lives 3 houses down the street"

"He lives 4 houses down the street"

Please state which one and why.

I'm saying that I live 4 houses down the street , he's saying 3..

I would say 3 as you don't count the number 50. Plus it's UP the street as the house numbers are increasing.;)

Wrong on both counts my friend.

We're at his so numbers decrease to mine.

And using your logic if we discount 50 or 58 as it should be there are still 4 numbers to count. 56,54,52 then mine 50.

1/10 must try harder :p

58 - where you are
56 - 1 house down, aka next door
54 - 2 houses down
52 - 3 houses down
50 - 4 houses down

This reminds me of a mistake my mate always makes. If it was Tuesday and he says "do you want to go out NEXT Friday", he means in 3 days not 10. He thinks I've double booked when in 3 days time, I'm elsewhere when he calls

he's the fourth.

his door is the fourth door (from yours).

he is 4 doors down.

(58-50)/2 = 4

You have to make 4 house sized jumps to visit him.

You are right.

"Down" or "up" is another matter. This could depend on the gradient, which end the street starts at, if its a culdesac etc..
